Coast/Beach
La Rochelle is the nearest coastal resort and in our opinion well worth a visit if you have time. Although approximately 2 hrs 30 mins drive, you can enjoy a full day to include the historic sights and also take in some of the lively evening entertainment of La Rochelle's street artists around the harbour area.

There are lake beaches much closer to hand at Lac St Pardoux and Vassiviere.

Golf
There are golf courses in the region that offer pay and play, the newest and nearest course is Mortemart (25 mins drive away). Other courses can be found at Saint Junien and Limoges.

Travel
Limoges airport is only 40 minutes drive away, and Ryanair provide a scheduled service all year round from several locations in the UK (London Stansted: East Midlands: Liverpool) and during the summer months from Leeds/Bradford. Flybe also operate from Southampton. By car, Le Dorat is located within easy reach of the A20 motorway between Paris and Toulouse (and on to Spain). By train, the TGV service from Paris to Poitiers connects by local train to Le Dorat.

Distances
Lac de Saint-Pardoux 30 mins drive. Limoges City 40 minutes drive. Poitiers 1 hour's drive. Roumazières-Loubert (velo rail) - one hour, 20 minutes drive. Paris 3.5 hours. Calais 6 hours.

Further details
Le Dorat has a number of very good restaurants in the town as well as several good cafe/bars/bistros, some with wi-fi, where you can sit inside or out and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Shops in the town include antique shops, book shops, a hobby shop, gift shops, and a factory outlet for Limoges pottery. There is also a Cinema in the town which shows the latest films in English.

There are several annual equestrian events held in Le Dorat during June, July & August and a National Horse show jumping competition is held during September.
Worth a visit is the picturesque book lovers' town of Montmorillon, "Village of Writers" which is 30 minutes' drive. Further afield the scenic lakes of Saint-Pardoux and Vassiviere, with sandy beaches, water sports, fishing and beautiful walks. Horse riding, walking, cycling, and fishing are particularly popular in the area. Please note a daily or weekly fishing licence may be required.

Places of historical interest nearby include Oradour sur Glane, a martyr village that has been left as it was since 1944 after being destroyed by the Nazis.
Many historical chateaux and churches can be found in the area, including the pretty 13th century chateau at Rochechouart, with its museum of modern art both indoors and out.

The city of Limoges, famous for its fine porcelain and china ware since 1770s offers a magnificent 13th century Gothic cathedral in the old quarter with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses. Also worth a visit, the Aquarium du Limousin in Limoges, Reynou zoo in Le Vigen, south of Limoges, La Vallee des Singes (Monkey Sanctuary) and Les Loups Des Chabrieres (wolf sanctuary) near the Guéret Forest.

Futuroscope, on the outskirts of Poitiers, offers an innovative theme park said to be one of the best parks in France.

For further information, Le Dorat has an excellent Tourist Office with English speaking staff.

Guest comments
Joanna (Sept 2011) We stayed at Poppies in Le Dorat for a week in mid-September 2011. The owners were incredibly helpful, offering advice and tips on places to visit, and providing idiot-proof directions from Limoges airport! They went out of their way to welcome us, even arranging for basic groceries for our late arrival on a Sunday. The cottage was charming: clean, tastefully decorated and well-equipped with everything you need for a self-catering holiday, including a small outside area with a barbecue, perfect for al fresco dining on summer evenings. I cannot recommend Poppies or the Limousin area strongly enough. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday in stunning surroundings, with plenty of great food and wine then this is the place for you!

Bill & Bridget (May 2011) Thank you for allowing myself and Bridget to rent your beautiful Cottage in Le Dorat . We really enjoyed our stay, felt very much at home and were sad to leave.

Owner profile

About the owner
Our plan is to move to Le Dorat permanently when we retire but in the meantime we are happy for our cottage to be enjoyed by holidaymakers and visitors to the town. Currently living and working in the Middle East, we visit Le Dorat several times a year to unwind, soak up the relaxing atmosphere of rural Haute Vienne and to enjoy good food & fine wines in a pleasant climate. Our aim always is to make our guests feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable. Some of our guests, from as far afield as Australia, have now become good friends. Tom & Catherine
