Owner profile
About the owner
The house belongs to the McKinlay family and is part of their independent vineyard, Domaine de Mourchon. Walter and Ronnie McKinlay first bought the land in 1998 and were joined a few years later by daughter and son-in-law, Kate and Hugo, who now help run the vineyard. Kate and Hugo renovated this old farmhouse 4 years ago and have brought up there three children there. During the summer months Kate, Hugo and the kids are either away on holiday or busy working at the Domaine and so rather than leave the house empty have decided to rent it out to holiday makers.
Year purchased: 1998
Why the owner chose a home in this location
The story of Domaine de Mourchon and the McKinlay family begins back in Scotland in the 1970s, when Walter McKinlay and his wife Ronnie chose an excellent Vacqueyras as the house wine for her restaurant at The Udny Arms Hotel in Aberdeenshire. Thus the family interest in the wines of the southern Cotes du Rhone began.
Some years later, having sold his business in information technology, Walter turned his attention back to the southern Cotes du Rhone, seeking a small established vineyard to which he and his wife might retire. Despite the fact that the land at Mourchon had no winery and no house, this outstanding terroir set in an extraordinarily beautiful location beneath the slopes of Mont Ventoux could not be denied. So Walter, (never really the retiring kind!) purchased the vineyard.
Unique benefits of the property
Staying at our family-run private vineyard offers a unique opportunity to understand the magic and mysteries of wine production with tours of the vines and winery as well as tastings of the Domaine’s quality wines. With the family at hand to help arrange visits to other key vineyards and sites of interest in the area, staying at the Winemaker’s House at Domaine de Mourchon will provide the visitor with a truly original and memorable holiday. This is great touring country, with mountain-biking and hiking in the hills, more sedate walking and cycling along the backroads and by-ways, colourful weekly markets in Nyons, Vaison-la-Romaine and Carpentras, roman remains at Vaison and Orange, the 14th century papal palace in Avignon, all set in a landscape of vines, 'garrigue' and lavender.
