The timber framed fermette, all rooms beamed, in a grassy courtyard with barnouthouses and extensive gardens to the rear, is typical of rural France. Ours lies in a sleepy village, with boulangerie and regionally famous restaurant just five minutes drive away. The valley is full of woods, ponds, river and is a popular area for walking, cycling, hunting, shooting and fishing. The world famous Abbaye de Valloires is just 3 kilometres away, and an ancient watermill that now houses a bakery and creperie. Excellent golf courses and wonderful sandy beaches are within half an hour, and fashionable resorts like Le Touquet. The region abounds with excellent yet inexpensive restaurants, taking a particular pride in local produce. A perfect region from which to explore medieval (Crecy, Agincourt) and first world war (Arras, Albert, Bapaume) battlefields, or cities like Paris (1.5 hrs), Liile (1.5 hrs), Amiens and Rouen (1 hr). The area holds many festivals and cultural events. A car is essential.

Guest comments
This is the first year of renting but friends and family have enjoyed it for 6 years. Friends think it is an excellent party house, or for a large family gathering.

Owner profile
About the owner
We are two retired academics with a passion for France and Italy - their food, wine, history, culture, landscape, people. It was our lifetime dream to have places of our own there, and to share them with friends and family. Now we are happy to share them more widely with others who we hope will develop their own love affair with these beautiful countries.
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a home in this location
For several years before buying we had taken cycling holidays in Northern France. We were enchanted by a region that was so easy to get to, and yet so bypassed by English tourists. With the beautiful countryside of the 7 valleys, plus the spectacular Atlantic beaches, then the historical legacy from centuries of fighting with the English, we found it to be full of interest.
We discovered a region proud of its 'terroir', which means lots of excellent restaurants without city prices. Its roads are uncluttered, and yet there is easy access to lovely cities like Amiens, Rouen, Paris, Lille.
We couldn't get enough of it ourselves, and wanted to share it with our family and friends, so bought a nice big house in the countryside, near to a spectacular Abbey and watermill in the Authie valley.
Unique benefits of the property
We feel we get all the peace of the countryside, yet have the fun of the beach, or the cultural interest from endless festivals of music, drama, food, wine etc.
It is great spot from which to visit the 1st World War battlefields, or the Normandy beaches, or even the medieval sites of Crecy and Agincourt.
There are chateaux, walled towns, underground cities, gardens, golf courses, wind sports schools, and many other activities in an area that hasn't been spoiled by tourists, yet it is just an hour south of Calais. You know its France from the minute you exit the Tunnel, but you don't need the long drives.
We have gone every month for six years, but now we are retired we can go for fewer but longer spells, and share it around with others a bit more.
