Villa les Hauts is one of a small select group of stone cut houses on an award winning development completed in 2005. There are 3 comfortable bedrooms, a heated pool which gets sun most of the day with teak deck and outside shower. Well equipped kitchen. Rear terraces for eating or lounging so you can move with the sun, with shade provided when it's just too hot. Stone built BBQ. The village is just 5 minutes walk away and has all you need for your stay. In the surrounding area there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to sample, including a 2* Michelin restaurant. There are views across the Corbieres and on a clear day from up the road you can see right across to Mount Canigou in the French Pyrenees. The area is packed with history from the Cathars to the territorial disputes between France and Spain. There are signposted trails to visit the Cathar castles. There is a definite Spanish feel in many places - from the local dialect to the Paellas to be found in many restaurants.

Changeover day
Normal changeover day is Saturday. Arrival between 4.00pm and 7.00pm, departure by 10.00 am. There are times when the changeover day can be negotiable. Flexible stays of more than a weeks may also be possible.

Notes on accommodation
The villa is child friendly, heating is available in each room for cooler parts of the year, fans are provided for hotter times. The pool as required by French Law has a safety cover.

Outside
Front garden with secluded private heated pool 7m x 4m with Roman Steps and about 1.5 metres deep at the deep end. Pool is only usable from May to end of September. Teak deck, shower and stone built barbecue. Table and chairs. Large rear garden with patio with table and chairs for 6, 2 further patios with loungers and seats, parasol.
Coast/Beach
About 25km to the Mediterranean beaches. Le Franqui has a long sandy beach and it is suitable for wind-surfing. Other beaches include Leucate and Toreille Plage. All beaches have cafes and restaurants nearby. There is a marina at Barcares, an aqualand at Port Leucate and water skiing is also available at some of the beaches.
Golf
Golf courses available at Carcassonne and St Cyprien. Both about 1 hour away.
Travel
Carcassone is about 1 hour's drive away as is Perpignan. Ryan Air fly to both and car-hire is available at the airports. Train to Narbonne or Perpignan is another possibility and car hire is available at both stations. From Calais, you can drive on motorways almost all the way. It is 1106 kms of which 1051 are on motorways.
You will need a car at the property.
Distances
Durban Cobieres is about 5 minutes walk from the villa. Carcassonne Medieval city is about an hour away, Narbonne about 45 minutes. There is a Cathar castle in Durban Corbieres, another at Tuchan - about 25 minutes away and those of Queribus and Peyrepetuse about 1 hour away. The Corbieres and Fitou wine routes are close by. The wild life park at Sigean is about 45 minutes by car. Terra Vinea, a 19 km underground wine cellar is about 30 minutes. Lots of beautiful walks right on the doorstep.
Further details
In Durban Corbieres there is a supermarket, bar/restaurant, bank, petrol station, pharmacy, tabac, bakery and a few other little shops. For hypermarkets the nearest are on the way to Narbonne or Sigean. A 2 star Michelin restaurant at Fontjoncouse is about 4km away. In Villeseque about 2 km there is a restaurant and most of the surrounding villages have their own bar/cafe/restaurant. Lots of seafood restaurants in the coastal towns particularly.
There is a tennis court in Durban, water skiing and wind surfing are available from Barcares and Le Franqui.
The Spanish border is about 1.5 hours on the Motorway and there is an excellent buffet restaurant at La Jonquera. The Abbaye de Fontfroid not only has historical interest but has a very good restaurant. It is about 45 minutes away in the direction of Narbonne.
The villages of Rennes-les-Bains and Rennes le Chateau are about 1 hour drive west along scenic country roads. The latter has been made famous from Dan Brown's Da Vinci code and Kate Mosse's Sepulchre. Kate Mosse's book Labyrinth centres on Carcassonne and the Cathars.
For trips further afield, about 2 hours to the south is the very pretty coastal town of Collioure. It has 3 sheltered beaches, lots of seafood restaurants and great ice-cream.
Booking notes
30% deposit on booking. The balance due 8 weeks before departure. A 250 euros breakage/damage deposit is payable with the final payment. This will be refunded within 2 weeks of the end of the rental period. The rental price is all inclusive, however if there is damage to the property, or if it is left in a state which requires more than our normal routine cleaning, then the cost of this will be deducted from the deposit. Cancellation within 8 weeks of departure incurs loss of deposit.

About the owner
We love the area because it is unspoilt and still very French with Spanish influences. We are now both retired and travel a lot but this area still draws us back.
Each time we go we discover something new.
There is something for everyone - we like the good food and wine and walking amongst the old castles. We love the climate, it extends the summer for us. Our grandchildren love the pool and the beaches. Our daughter can indulge her hobby of water skiing. So we are all happy.
In the winter, you can see the snow covered Pyrenees under clear blue skies.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Easy to reach but peaceful. Beautiful scenery with lots of walks. Beautiful coastline of the Mediterranean not far away. Not too near or too far from larger towns should you need them.
