Set in a quiet street which turns into a footpath down the valley, the house is on three floors. The top floor is devoted to the large living-room from which porte-fenetres lead out onto the south-facing roof terrace. The middle floor has the double & one twin bedroom, kitchen & dining area, and the main bathroom. The dining area opens onto the balcony. The ground floor has one twin & one single bedroom, a kitchenette and a shower room. A door leads out onto the patio & the south-facing garden. Parking is easy 30 yards away. It is a pleasant walk over the river to the shops. The little tourist train stops at Lapradelle viaduct. The village lies on the banks of the river Boulzane, a very beautiful place. Beyond it is the Cathar castle of Puilaurens which you see from the house. A lovely 35-mile drive to the Mediterranean. Excellent walking country all around, strenuous or otherwise. Watersports at Axat nearby. Medieval castles in every direction. Ideal for first or second honeymooners!

Notes on accommodation
Heating is by electric heaters. The garden, balcony and roof terrace are fenced and very suitable for children.

Accessibility
Although there is a bathroom, kitchenette, one single & one double bedroom on the ground floor, the steps up to the middle and top floors probably (and sadly) render the house unsuitable for people with serious mobility difficulties.

Outside
The spacious south-facing roof terrace is approached by porte-fenetres from the living-room. It includes loungers, outdoor seating and lighting. Below it, the smaller breakfasting balcony leads off the dining area. On the ground floor, a door leads out onto the covered patio and the grassed garden, suitable for sitting out or for children's play. The barbecue and whirligig are by the patio. The garden, like the terrace and balcony, is fenced for safety. All command the view of the castle and mountains.

Coast/Beach
It is a beautiful 35-mile drive to the Mediterranean sea. Beaches are mainly sandy, and the principal ones are supervised. The French avoided ribbon development along its coast, so the main beaches are in, or near towns which offer restaurants and other facilities.

Golf
There is no golf course near Lapradelle as far as we know. We can arrange an introduction to the beautiful course at Carcassonne. International courses are at St. Cyprien by the coast.

Skiing
The nearest ski slope is at Mijanes, about 20 miles away. There are others further up the Aude valley towards Font Romeu.

Travel
The nearest airports are Perpignan (30 miles) and Carcassonne (45 miles), both served by Ryanair. It is a beautiful drive to both. Ryanair also fly to Girona. Otherwise, the international airports are Toulouse (about 100 miles) and Barcelona (about 140 miles). Car hire is recommended.

Distances
Carcassonne is a 'must' - Europe's largest fortified medieval city with its moat, battlements and basilica (45 miles). Lovely medieval towns such as Limoux (30 miles) and Alet-les-bains (25 miles). Many Cathar castles in the area, especially in the Corbieres hills which are wild and worth exploring. The valley of the river Aude leads up to the Cerdagne, a plateau surrounded by high mountains, from which the little 'train jaune' can take you down to Perpignan.

Further details
We say this house is for romantics only, for lovers of the countryside, village life, France Profonde, walking strenuous or otherwise, fauna & flora, bird-watching, history & castle-bagging - or lazing about and relaxing. Lapradelle boasts a general store, a bar, two restaurants and one or two other shops, often seasonal. Le Grand Duc at Gincla (5 miles) is a good restaurant. Our cleaning lady will recommend more. Your banks, supermarkets etc. are at St. Paul de Fenouillet (10 miles) or Quillan ( 11 miles). The little tourist train runs from Axat towards Rivesaltes, stopping at Lapradelle. It stops to let you take photographs! You can stop off at the several villages on its way. You can drive up to the top of the high crags behind the castle from which you have a view over the entire countryside. Our website www.lapradelle.iowners.net gives details of the many places to visit within 50 miles or so. The principal attractions of Lapradelle are the sheer beauty of its location, the spectacular ever-changing scenery round about, and the wealth of open-air activities available to you. That's why we say 'for romantics only'.

Booking notes
Deposits are payable on booking. Balances are payable not less than 6 weeks before your holiday. Sterling cheques are preferred, but tell us if you wish to use other methods. Coverage of electricity costs in cooler months will be subject to negotiation.

Guest comments
Just a short note to thank you so much for the use of your beautiful house in Lapradelle. Everything was 1st. class & we enjoyed our holiday very much. We enjoyed the sun-loungers on the roof terrace and ate on the patio enjoying a different view of the mountains. The indoors facilities were superb & extremely comfortable with plenty of reading & entertainment. The walk up to Puilaurens castle followed by a reward of a lunch of moules frites washed down by a pichet of blanc at the village restaurant was a particularly happy experience (Tom M. 09.09).
We had a wonderful time in Lapradelle. The house is lovely and we never tired of the view! We attempted some panoramic shots, but it is hard to do justice to that landscape. We bagged all the castles, sampled the coast & the mountain roads and managed the local walks. (Nicholas 7.08)
We absolutely loved the house, had a fantastic holiday and are plotting to see how we can fit in time there next summer. (R.D. 08.09)
