La Chartreuse is a spacious (150m2) Perigord house in lovely honey-coloured stone, originally inhabited by monks. On the edge of the Pécharmant vineyards and only a 15 min. drive from Bergerac, the house is set in 8 acres of private meadows and woodland, perfect for leisurely walks. The whole property has just been restored to an exceptional standard and offers a high-quality environment for fun and relaxation. You can sunbathe at the stunning south-facing infinity pool and enjoy unspoilt views of rolling countryside and a fairytale medieval village. Ideally situated between the historic towns of Bergerac, Périgueux and Sarlat, La Chartreuse is a perfect starting point to explore the region's many tourist attractions.

Changeover day
Saturday in season (flexible out of season). Arrival after 5pm and departure before 10am (unless by prior arrangement with owners).

Notes on accommodation
Non-smoking house (but smokers are welcome to smoke out of doors). Sorry, no pets allowed. A selection of books and indoor games is provided. An information pack of local tourist attractions is given on arrival. The owners live separately on the property and are happy to offer assistance or advice if needed. Otherwise you will enjoy total privacy during your stay.
Accessibility
The house (only one step to enter) and pool area are wheelchair accessible, but there are no special facilities.
Outside
At the rear of the house is a secluded patio area and barbecue for al fresco dining under shady trees. The private infinity pool is 12x6m, with both a shallow end (1m20) and a deep end (2m20). The Roman steps leading into the pool are ideal for small children to splash in. Around the pool is a large sunbathing area with loungers. The pool can be floodlit at night for midnight swims. Badminton and table tennis are also available.
Coast/Beach
Arcachon and the Atlantic beaches are within reach for a day by the sea. And you can always sail down the Dordogne river in a traditional 'gabarre' or (for the fitter) a canoe!
Golf
Both Bergerac and the stylish Château Les Merles golf course are a comfortable 15-min. drive away. Close by are the local vineyards, historic châteaux, beautiful bastide villages and a selection of picturesque markets. And within easy driving distance is Sarlat and the Périgord Noir (to the east) and Saint Emilion / Bordeaux (to the west).
Travel
Bergerac airport is only 22km away and offers low-cost flights from Stansted and other UK airports. Bordeaux airport is 2 hours away. A car is essential to make the most of the rural beauty of the Dordogne.

La Chartreuse is situated in a particularly beautiful area of the Dordogne and dominates the surrounding countryside, making it ideal for cycling or walking. The lovely Château de la Gaubertie is a leisurely 15 min. walk through private woodland. The property is completely tranquil and secluded, but only a few hundred meters from the main road to Bergerac, with its many supermarkets and shopping facilities. The nearest village (only 2km) is Saint Georges de Montclar, with its stunning medieval architecture and ruined château. Here you will find a baker's shop, mini-mart, post office and local bar-restaurant.
Booking notes
A deposit of 500 euros per week is payable to confirm the booking. The balance is paid 8 weeks prior to arrival.

About the owner
We're a bi-cultural family : I'm English and my husband Hervé is French, with two grown-up sons who now work in London. We spent many years in Paris and enjoyed every minute of the hustle-bustle of big city living. But once the boys had left home to pursue their university studies, we decided to change pace and discover a different lifestyle in an area of France with a high quality of living. We made the right decision and can now savour the warmth, peace and friendliness of the beautiful Dordogne.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Chance (or fate!) brought us to South West France on a flying visit and we decided to check out a couple of properties on sale to get a feel for the area. La Chartreuse was one of them and we fell in love with it at first sight. Having decided that this was The Place for us, we spent a whole year having it restored and renovated to the level of comfort we needed for ourselves and our future guests.
Unique benefits of the property
La Chartreuse has a unique authenticity and charm which comes from its lovely stone buildings, beautiful setting and breathtaking views. Lying by the infinity pool in the peace and quiet of a hot afternoon must be everyone's idea of the "dolce vita" ! Yet although you have space and beauty all around, you'll never feel isolated as the property is conveniently located to take advantage of all the historical attractions and countless activities of La Belle Dordogne.
