Guest comments
'We really enjoyed our stay at your place, the kids had a lot of fun both in the gite and in the attractions nearby. For us adults, it was a good opportunity to relax! Without doubt, we might try to come again before the kids aretoo 'young' to find this kind of vacation not exciting enough for them!' Alejandro & Kirsti - Oslo
'We found the gites at Brives an absolute haven of calm and tranquility. This was a wonderful contrast to our busy life at home and our two weeks were a wonderful break. Phil and Glyn, you were excellent hosts who were always available when required. The facilities in the gites were well beyond our expectations and had everything you could need for a family holiday. The pool and 'games' you provided also gave the children lots to do.' Julian & Caroline, Herts.
'Just to say thanks a million for a great stay with you both. The accommodation was top notch and we will certainly recommend you to friends travelling to the area.' Kimmitt & Edel, Ireland
Owner profile
Phil & Glyn Silvester (Phil's leaving 'do' - 2008)
About the owner
Phil and Glyn bought a beautiful charentaise farmhouse in 2003, clinching the deal on the same day England won the rugby world cup in Australia! For 5 years this has been our maison secondaire (holiday home) or 'bolt hole'! Phil was a successful Headteacher of a large special school in Dorset for 16 years, after a teaching career which began in Coventry and Warwickshire. Phil was awarded the CBE in 2008 for services to special education. Glyn played the role of home maker for our 3 lovely children (Sam, Rebecca and Kate) whilst (also) working as a childminder, hospital receptionist and teaching assistant in schools. We moved to Puddletown (Dorset) in 1993 from Kenilworth (Warwickshire) due to Phil's new job. From 1989 to 2007 we built, established and managed Cote Holiday Cottages.
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
We have always loved France and (particularly) the south west of France. We have taken one or two holidays a year in France for almost 30 years and we always intended to buy a holiday home here. We chose the Charente maritime because it remains 'la vrai France' and it has a superb climate. The Charente maritime is the second sunniest area of France, after the Mediterranean.
The Charente has everything - beautiful villages, historic towns and cities (Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Pons and La Rochelle), picturesque countryside (vines and sunflowers aplenty!) - a majestic river and beautiful beaches. Moreover this region is unspoilt and easily accessible by car, train or plane (regional airports at Angouleme, La Rochelle and Bordeaux with Poitiers and Limoges a little further away).
Unique benefits of the property
We are ten minutes' drive from Cognac and Pons, twenty minutes from Saintes and an easy half an hour drive from the coast. We are in the middle of the 'golden triangle' of Cognac - Pons - Saintes in the Grande Champagne, the heart of the cognac producing countryside.
We enjoyed running holiday homes in the UK for ten years before emigrating to France in 2008. We had always planned to give up our 'day jobs' in schools to live our dream in France.
After a long year of building work we are now 'itching' to get started. We are looking forward to sharing our French oasis with others who need to relax and re-charge their batteries a little!
