Notes on accommodation
With two terraces and large downstairs rooms, as well as the grounds and pool area (with games room), there is always a quiet corner somewhere even if the house is full. On the other hand, if there are only a few of you it is not a house which feels uncomfortably large.
Outside
The house and barn stand in nine acres of garden, meadow and woodland. On hot days there is always a shady spot somewhere, especially on the covered terrace or under the trees, and cars can be parked under cover.
The 10m x 5m pool has a depth of 1.1m to 2m, with roman steps into the shallow end. It is sheltered by the adjoining barn wall and other stone walls, which means that there is always both sun and shade on the paved surround. In conformity with French legislation, the pool is accessed only through a locked gate with two closing mechanisms, and the surrounding walls meet the minimum height criteria. There is a barbecue set in a sheltered area next to the barn. In the ground floor of the barn, reached from the pool area, there is a games room with table tennis and table football. There are tennis courts in the village 2km away, and a 9-hole golf course within 20 minutes.
Golf
9-hole course 20 minutes away.
Travel
La Borde Basse is roughly 8 hours driving time from the western Channel ports and one or two hours more from Calais or Dunkirk. The nearest airports are Toulouse (1.25 hrs) and Bergerac (1.5 hrs), Bordeaux and Carcassonne both being about 2.5 hrs drive. Detailed directions can be provided from any port or airport. Trains to Cahors from Paris (Gare d'Austerlitz) take about 5 hrs, and from Toulouse about 1 hr.
Distances
The village of Castelnau-Montratier, with its three windmills and pretty arcaded central square, is 4 km away. It has everything one might need, including a small supermarket, chemist, bank, and post office. The city of Cahors with its famous bridge and more extensive shopping, including weekly markets, is 24km to the NE.
Further details
The southern Lot is a mainly agricultural area where life is relatively gentle. There is plenty to see and do locally. For children: riding 10 mins away, boat trips and canoeing on the Lot at Cahors, water sports on the lake at Molieres (20 mins SW), underground cave systems about 1 hr north, and much more. Markets: Castelnau-Montratier has a small market every Sunday morning and a local food producers' market on Wednesday evenings in July/August. There is a much bigger market in Cahors every Wednesday and Saturday. Restaurants: While the area is not bristling with Michelin stars you can eat perfectly well locally. There are two cafe/bistros in the 'place' in C-M plus a hotel/restaurant. There are other restaurants in the area, including a very good 'ferme-auberge' (meals on the farm, using their own produce) about 20 mins away. There is a larger selection of restaurants in Cahors and Montauban, both about 25 mins away.

Guest comments
We stayed at La Borde Basse for a month in May/June. We had a wonderful time and were very sad to leave. The property suited our purposes perfectly: there's lots of space, including large bedrooms and ample bathrooms. The pool and games room were excellent and were well used. We would have no reservations in recommending La Borde Basse. (JH, Aberystwyth, August 2011)
Our family has recently returned from our second perfect holiday at La Borde Basse. The house and its surroundings are a mixture of enchanting French country charm, English cosy and elegant comfort, practical living, superb swimming and games facilities, all set in the most beautiful and tranquil countryside. (DP, London, August 2011)
La Borde Basse was everything we wanted and more. The house was of exceptional quality, it really was some-one's home and felt very welcoming. The swimming pool was delightful and child proof. The grounds were well kept and ideal for children. (AG, Harrogate September 2011)
