Notes on accommodation
A grocery welcome pack is provided for guests staying for one week or more.
There are centrally heated radiators in the two bedrooms and the bathroom and a woodburning stove for heating the main living area. There is a nominal charge for any wood burnt during your stay.
We have all the "gear" for babies and children - cots and bed linen, high chairs, all terrain 3-wheel pushchair, stair gates, as well as indoor and outdoor toys and books.
The gite is perfect for a couple wanting to have a "get away from it all" holiday or for those wanting to explore the area but it is equally suited for a relaxing family holiday in the countryside.

No smoking is allowed in the gite. Well behaved pets may be considered, please ask us.

Accessibility
Access to the gite is up a short flight of external steps once inside the gite, the living accommodation and the master bedroom are on the same level. The mezzanine bedroom is up a flight of stairs and has a sturdy oak balustrade all around it for safety. The mezzanine has low beams and therefore is ideally suited to children or agile adults! There are stair gates for safety.

Unfortunately due to the stairs the gite is inaccessible for people in a wheelchair.

Outside
The swimming pool is 10mx5m with roman steps. It is shared with our family but we aim to ensure that you get plenty of time in the pool and area if that is what you like. The pool garden has sun loungers, garden chairs & a dining table under the pergola as well as a BBQ. There are also places to relax in the courtyard - two hammocks shaded by the lime tree, & a table at the bottom of the gite stairs for your sole use. The open cart shed also has a large dining table for times when it's too hot to eat outside. There is ample parking space.
Chez Devalon is an old french dairy farm - we are now running it as a (nearly) organic smallholding, strving at self-sufficiency. We have a small flock of sheep (come in the spring to see the lambs), chickens & we hope to have a few pigs next year. We cut & bale our own hay & straw & grow very small crops of corn & sunflowers for animal feed. We also have an orchard and rather too large veggie patch! Down the road we have a willow plantation.

Coast/Beach
The nearest coastal beach is at Royal or La Palmyre which is about a 2 hour drive. However there are several river beaches within easy reach - Aubeterre, St Aulaye, Lisle as well as well equipped lakes. Lake Jemaye is our nearest which is well worth the 40 minute drive, where there’s a beach with bars & restaurants overlooking the water front & safe paddling & swimming areas (life guards at peak times).

Golf
There is a 9-hole golf club about 20 minute drive from us and an 18-hole course is available in Perigueux about an hour away.

Special interest holidays
We occasionally run willow weaving courses (willow hurdles and plant supports or living willow garden structure) so please get in touch if you are interested.
We also rent out a tandem so if you fancy a holiday exploring the area with a difference then please contact us for more details.
As a family striving towards self-sufficiency we welcome any help offered on the farm - if you are interested in a "working" holiday on our smallholding please let us know - enthusiasm and willingness to put in a hard days work are more important than knowledge and there is always plenty to do!

Travel
The use of a car is highly recommended unless you arrive on bikes!
Getting Here:
Flying: The nearest airports are Angouleme (1 hr) and Bergerac (1hr15), other possible airports being Bordeaux, Poitier, Limoges (all 2hrs) and La Rochelle (2hrs45mins). Flybe, Ryanair, BMI Baby, Easyjet and BA all fly into the area.
By Rail: TGV train to London via Paris or Lille takes about six hours from Angouleme.
Ferry/Drive: St Malo, Caen & La Havre all about a 6 hours drive away & Calais about 8hrs30.

Distances
The gite lies about 2km from the village of Nanteuil Auriac de Bourzac. Verteillac lies close by for basic shopping requirements & bank, P.O., bars/restaurants, doctor pharmacy, garage, tourist information. Just 15kms away is Riberac, renowned for its busy Friday market, or in the other direction, Villebois Lavalette, both having good supermarkets & other town amenities. Further afield take a day out to explore Cognac(70km), Bergerac (75km), the vineyards of St Emilion(80km), or Bordeaux (120km)

Further details
Local Attractions: You will be ideally placed for access to all the beautiful sites in the Dorgogne and Charente. There are chateaux to visit, prehistoric caves to explore or pretty market towns to meander around. Not to be missed is market day in Riberac on Friday or you could go to Villebois Lavalette for their modest market on a Saturday morning under an incredible old oak structure, where you can join in with the locals eating oysters with beer. The Perigord region is renowned for its quality food and wines and there are numerous good yet affordable restaurants locally. Typically a four or five course lunch costs between 10 and 12 euros, often with wine included! For the serious wine lover, Bergerac is just over an hours drive away or you could take a day trip to St Emilion (1hr45mins) or Bordeaux (2hrs). Cognac is another interesting day out where you can take a tour around one of several brandy houses and then take a wander around the shops or along the river.

Activities: For the more energetic there are plenty of outdoor activities. Try canoeing along the river from Brantome, the little Venice of the Dordogne, to Bordeilles with its fortified chateaux, or explore the quiet but well signed lanes by bike or on foot. Several river beaches are within easy reach where the children can play in the sand & swim or you could visit Lake Jemaye, well worth the 40 minute drive, where there’s a beach with bars & restaurants overlooking the waterfront & safe paddling & swimming areas (life guards at peak times). Facilities at Chez Devallon include swimming in the pool, boules, badminton, table tennis, table football, swings & slide, 14ft trampoline, sandpit, trikes, BBQ, & 8 aces of grounds to wander around. We also have a large selection of books, games, toys & a DVD/ CD library on request. To help you get the most out of the area we have put together a comprehensive guide with leaflets & lists of local events (eg. village festivals, night markets & brocantes).

Tres Bon - What a wonderful place, plenty of open space to just relax and enjoy. The owners are brill, like your own family and you must sample Wendy`s cooking. Highly recommended hence we're going back for more. "The gites", Derbyshire

A lovely, well equipped gite, beautiful away from it all location. This is our second visit and the kids are already asking when they can go back again! Wendy, Matt & the family once again made us feel extremely welcome, they aways went that extra mile to sort things out for us. Pip & Kev, Nottingham

Our French Experience -Just got back from staying at Chez Devallon. What a stunning place to stay. The gite was as described and more. Very peaceful with spectacular views, only regret was that it wasn't later in the year when the fields of sunflowers would be in bloom. Wendy and Matt really friendly, hardworking couple with charming children. Would recommend for all, plenty to do in the area & plenty of places to eat closeby. Tillydog, Stockton
