Notes on accommodation
The house is suitable for people of all ages, both young and old. We have ground floor bedrooms and bathrooms, very convenient for elderly or less able guests. The many games available keep all ages amused. The outside covered terrace enables barbeque's in all weathers and is a great hit with guests. There are many places to sit, read, lounge or even fall asleep in the extensive grounds.

Because the property was once a chapel and later a presbytery, it has a fabulous location next to the village church. The fields beyond and large surrounding laurel hedge create a very private and tranquil environment. However, being a detached property in an acre of grounds, with metre thick walls, means guests can be as loud as they want (within reason) without causing offence. We believe that the conscious decision not to have a television, persuades people to discover the sometimes forgotten pleasures of conversation, fun, games or just being silly! Guests tell us that it works for them.

Accessibility
Ground floor bedrooms, wcs and bathrooms are sufficient for all bar wheelchair bound.

Outside
Covered terrace accessible from the open plan kitchen, dining for 16. 2 barbeque's (one has been used for a meal for 40 people). 2 Paris cafe green metal tables and 10 matching chairs. Teak outdoor table for 10 with matching chairs. Teal table in flower garden with parasol and 4 chairs. 2 deck loungers. 2 hammocks. 1 garden bench. 1 table plus 4 chairs in the copse. Courtyard 10 x 10m.

Le Touquet has 2 courses 40 mins drive and Belle Dune is a renowned course. Nampont St Martin 30 minutes drive. 2 courses in delightful setting with clubhouse.

We provide a complete catered service for golfers (full English breakfast and 4 course dinner in the evenings).

Special interest holidays

Guest comments
Thank you so much for letting us share in a little piece of French life in the fabulous Le Verger. The house exceeded all our expectations and was a perfect venue for our 12 strong party of friends and family. We had a week full of fun, laughter and total relaxation. The site of the house was idyllic, quiet and peaceful yet within easy distance of some great places to visit, the most memorable for me being Vimy, hour's drive, to see the First World War trenches and the breathtaking Canadian War Memorial. Also recommended is the bird Sanctuary at Parc du Marquenterre where spoonbills and avocets were seen. I can also recommend a canoeing trip on Le Canche – very reasonable and great fun! The kitchen was exceptionally well equipped and Drew fulfilled a long held dream of producing some authentic French cuisine for family and friends in a kitchen that lends itself to accommodating large parties- and there was plenty of room for everyone. About the owner
We discovered this property in November 2001. We wanted a house which was easily accessible from England, so that we, our family, friends and guests could would make the best use of it. This was the second house we viewed and it was love at first sight (although some have suggested we had foresight!). Moira speaks fluent french and so it was possible to undertake all the renovations using local French builders. Although we experienced some frustrations, mainly around timing, we have been very pleased with the quality of work and value for money. We find our trips to Le Verger a perfect contrast to our normal London life. We have celebrated a number of our own landmark birthdays and anniversaries at the house. We look forward to hearing from you. Moira and Peter McDermott.

Year purchased: 2002

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We wanted a house that would be well used (not just once or twice a year). Living in South London, Nord Pas de Calais seemed the perfect choice. We had grown to appreciate Montreuil (particularly the wonderful cuisine at the Chateau) and were impressed with the charms of Le Touquet. We wanted an old house and plenty of land. This persuaded us to extend our search around the market town of Hesdin and that is how we found Le Verger. Travelling from London, it is true to say that one arrives feeling more relaxed than when setting off! Then the tranquility of the place just gently grabs you as the arduous task of uncorking wine bottles and lighting log fires becomes the main work of the evening. We love the many markets in local towns and buying good wine for £3 a bottle.

Unique benefits of the property
Although the property oozes with character (14c chapel, 1 metre thick stone walls and exposed elm beams), it is bang up to date with wall and roof insulation and double-glazed windows with solid wood frames. This means you experience the inexplicable atmosphere of a really old and significant building, with all the comfort and convenience of a truly modern home. Although there lots of excursions you can go on: Le Touquet (Paris Plage), Agincourt, Pleasure Park, Golf at Nampont St Martin, Nature parks, cafes, restaurants and bars, we find that most people prefer to chill out or play games at the house. Our kitchen has been described by guests as 'a cook's paradise'. Certainly, one of the joys is to visit Hesdin food market on Thursday morning, stock-up on food and then cook it.
