Notes on accommodation
The converted barn accommodation is large and airy and makes a wonderfully comfortable villa. Due to the thick walls of the old barn the house stays relatively cool in the summer. The property is ideal for children with a fully fenced garden (be sure to supervise children at all times by the pool). Having a bedroom downstairs is terrific for elderly guests and the stairs to the bathrooms have side rails. Pets are welcomed, restricted to downstairs only and there is a charge of £20 per pet for extra cleaning. Please let us know in advance if you will be bringing your pet.
Accessibility
Downstairs double bedroom with WC on ground floor. Note all bath/shower rooms are upstairs (all stairs have hand rails).
Outside
The property is surrounded by an acre of garden including woodland with 2 patios on east and west side suitable for lounging and dining. Outdoor gas barbecue, alfresco dining access from the kitchen both sides of house, pool-side drinks table and dining chairs. Sun loungers with cushions and umbrellas are provided. The pool with Roman steps is 8 x 4m and is in a position where it is sunny all day (sufficient heat by sunlight). Outdoor pool shower and pool alarm fitted (supervision of children by the pool is essential at all times).
The large and rambling garden has many interesting features. Kids will love playing in the woodland, which is fenced in as part of the property.
La Cachette is fully fenced and as far as we know dog proof, providing front gates are kept shut. The back lawn makes an interesting pitch for a game of boules at sunset.
Coast/Beach
La Cachette is 6kms from a picturesque swimming lake and sandy beach at the village of Saint Saud Lacoussiere. A popular daytime location for families and includes a lakeside restaurant and bar, with more restaurants and shops in the village.
Golf
There are 3 local golf courses in the area. The nearest is Champs Romain, 5 mins walk from the house. The tiny local bar in Champs Romain village welcomes visitors after a hard day’s tee. The best golf course around is the beautiful Chancelade (20kms) - picturesque 18 holes with a great 19th hole!
Travel
Distance from Calais is 760km and takes 9 hours. (Boulogne-Rouen-Le Mans-Poitiers-Angouleme). Sea France ferry company are very competitive. The Norfolk line to Dunkirk instead of Calais is slightly longer or take an overnight ferry to St Malo (9-10 hours drive to La Cachette). By air to Limoges (60km) or Bergerac (115km) we suggest Ryanair or Flybe. Car hire available at both airports. Angouleme train station (65km) from Paris CDG takes 4 hours and car hire available at Angouleme.
Distances
La Cachette is near to Nontron (10km), Abjat-sur-Bandiat (6km) and St Saud Lacoussiere (3km) are less than 10 mins away with butchers, bakers and restaurants. Nontron has shops, banks, post office and two large supermarkets. Water sports, go karting, fishing, tennis, horse riding, hiking and golf are all activities available nearby. Canoeing is a great fun day out in Brantome, 15km, (or start at just about any point on the Dronne River). Excellent restaurants in the area.
Further details
Local to La Cachette are a number of interesting places to visit. Nontron, official centre of the Perigord Vert region is 10km north, a town set among attractive lakes providing ideal picnic sites, swimming and fishing. Nontron stands high on rock fortified by ramparts and a picturesque 18th century chateau.
The Nontron museum of dolls, models, games is a fantastic place to amuse children on a day out. Nontron is also the artisan 'town of knives'.
Within 30 mins drive is the attractive medieval town of Brantome, awe-inspring to wander around the ancient abbey built by Charlemagne in 769. The famous weekly market on Friday morning in Brantome is a culinary delight for locals and tourists alike.
16 km further down the river is the pretty village of Bourdeilles. The small village is home to an impressive chateau built in different centuries – Medieval (12th) and Renaissance (16th) which houses an exceptionally valuable collection of furniture.
Canoes can be rented in Brantome, paddle down the river Dronne to Bourdeilles (pick-up provided at destination). Take the journey at a relaxed pace and stop off on a river bank for a picnic halfway (great deli food available in Brantome before you set off).
Also not far is the town of Grottes de Villars and the famously preserved caves with incredible stalactites forming natural sculptures. An underground river flows through cave chambers connected by galleries of ancient cave paintings over 17,000 years old. The caves form the largest underground network in the Perigord and were discovered in 1953. A great value day visit!
All the local village festivals are held in July/August which are always fun to visit, all with amazing firework displays.
Chateau de Puyguilhem is a fascinating Renaissance masterpiece that has been restored after WW2.
The overhanging gardens of Marqueyssac are 40 mins drive, 100 acres of beautifully manicured gardens in the surroundings of the chateau and at the mouth of a breathtaking valley.
