Guest comments
"The house was in first class condition set in a beautiful location. We have been in this area before but have not stayed in a property as well set out. The kitchen, sitting and bedrooms were all as you described, it was like being at home. The pool was an added bonus and was spotless. It was nice to go to a place that was built well and well looked after. " July 2010
"The house was well located in such a beautiful spot. Fantastic for nature spotters and walkers. It was clean and spacious. The surrounding area is filled with wonderful places to visit - not enough time to go to all on our list sadly!
It was really well stocked with all you could need such as children's plastic plates, bottle openers, plenty of coat hangers, DVD's, games and books. You've obviously thought carefully about what people need." August 2010
"A quick note to say that we had a wonderful holiday in Villa Maple Rouge. The house is beautifully designed and lends itself to a perfect holiday"
Owner profile
Mount Canigou
About the owner
Our family has had connections with the French Pyrenees since the 1970s when my grandfather bought a plot of land near Ceret in the hope of building a holiday home there. This did not work out but since then we have grown to love this corner of France very much and are happy to share the knowledge and experience we have to make your holiday in our house as enjoyable as possible. We are all based on the south coast of the UK and regularly go over to France to enjoy the sunshine and amazing scenery. With children ranging in age from 3-12 we have tested out the suitability of the region for families and can happily report that there is enough to keep them happy from old castles to explore to charming beaches to relax on. Combined with great food and wine there is lots for us adults too!
Year purchased: 2005
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We purchased the land in Fuilla where the houses are back in 2005, the location is stunning in a quiet village with amazing views of Mount Canigou. We were lucky to then be given the planning permission to build the houses and a busy few years ensued with all the different aspects of managing such a big project whilst living in the UK. The first house was completed in 2009 and the second one in 2010. Fuilla is now part of the Catalan Pyrenees Natural Park which is recognised as being an area of outstanding natural beauty. If you enjoy French food you will not be disappointed staying here, there is a very friendly Bistro in the village with excellent food and a warm welcome. There are many other restaurants in nearby villages including a very good one just up the road in Sahorre.
Unique benefits of the property
We really enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life when at Fuilla. It is peaceful and in a sheltered valley so it often catches the sunshine when nearby Prades is cloudy wnd wet! Being in the foothills of the Pyrenees the weather is changeable and it is great to sit back and watch the clouds come and go over nearby Mount Canigou. It is very often warm and sunny though and having a swimming pool makes it the perfect spot to relax with children. They are more often happy to stay at the house and swim but it it great to know there is such a good variety of things to do very nearby. Villefranche is just down the road and is a World Heritage Unesco Site, it is a very well preserved Cathar medieval fortified town - its a bit like a miniature Carcasonne!
