Holiday gite in the tiny hamlet of Puilaurens, perfectly placed between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. Escape the busy tourist resorts and discover a lesser known area of France with it's spectacular backdrop of mountainous peaks. Puilaurens is a romantic idyll in a picturesque setting with it's own Cathar Castle perched high above watching down on you. It is an ideal base to explore rural France, discover more about the Languedoc-Roussillon region and to savour the local wines. Our aim is to make you feel you are home from home. We try to provide everything you could need in equipment and comfort, from cooking a gourmet meal, to a quiet evening in front of the television or listening to music.
The River Boulzane runs though the village and offers peace and tranquillity. The whole area is one of peaks, gorges, valleys and spectacular scenery. Both the Mediterranean Sea and Ski-resorts are about an hour's drive away.

Further details
The Castle at Puilaurens was one of a ring of fortresses used during the crusade against the Cathars. There are 8 castles in the Aude region. You can walk up to the Castle at Puilaurens, which takes about three quarters of an hour. The views when you get to the castle are well worth the effort.
Your stay can be as active or as quiet as you want it. There are numerous opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, climbing, cycling, riding, ski-ing and walking.
There are lakes for swimming at Puivert (30 mins drive), Chalabre and Arques (11Km east of Couiza). The Gorges de Galamus, just outside St Paul de Fenouillet offers 3 rock pools deep enough to swim. There is also a brand new open air pool at Axat with slides and chutes, just as you leave the village on the right, and a small open air pool at St. Paul de Fenouillet.

Guest comments
Relaxed for the first time in a long time. Too much to see to do much work (working hols). Hope to come again. Escaped from London.
Such a wonderful, relaxing holiday. Your cottage is beautiful and so clean. The area is walkers paradise with stunning views and scenery within easy reach of the beaches. Sue & Roger Matthews.
We had a truly lovely time here, it was just home to home we felt. The cottage is lovely, very quincey and original in a really pleasing way. Also so nice to arrive somewhere where there’s what you need there in case you haven’t arrived in time to sort it! 10/10 Sarah you are a star! The scenery out here is spectacular and we've been out chateau hunting most days – superb!

Owner profile
About the owner
I fell in love with the area around Puilaurens back in 2000. Saw my house on Friday 13th October in the pouring rain, and put in an offer the next day. I still love it as much now as then and I was just unlucky that day with the weather! On a sunny day it is pure heaven to be there.
I go there when I can, and am happy to share my love with other people, so they too can enjoy a lovely unspoilt area of France.
