Owner profile

Sharon & Martin

About the owner
Sharon and Martin moved to France 'lock stock and Barrel' in July 2005 along with their two children aged 7 and 10. Searching for; better weather, a good village culture, and the opportunity to immerse themselves in the French lifestyle; the Deux Sevres became their new home. Since moving, property renovation has featured heavily in their daily activities, converting a run down farmhouse and forge into their new family home where they also run a small holding of sheep, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and a veg patch. Invariably some of their local produce will appear in the Gite welcome pack.

Year purchased: 2008

Why the owner chose a home in this location
In the summer of 2007 whilst on an afternoon’s visit to St Loup village to look at its lovely 15th Century chateau and quaint medieval streets, the house which is now “Le Colombage” was spotted, having just been put up for sale. Like all the other houses on the ‘Grand Rue’, it had been built in about 1450, and had over time housed many craftsmen and artisans. It is believed that originally the property was a boulangerie, selling bread over the large stone slab directly to the village folk standing in the cobbled street. The house and luckily a lot of its original antique furniture, was purchased from the French family who had occupied it for the previous 150 years. 15 months of sympathetic renovation followed, revealing original features which fashions over the centuries had hidden.

Unique benefits of the property
Recognising the unique nature and enviable location of the house, it became apparent very quickly that ‘Le Colombage’ was ideally placed for holiday rentals. Research showed that it would appeal to young and old alike, for holiday makers wanting to experience traditional french village life (boules on the green type of thing, local bars, small restaurants etc), whilst being within easy travelling distance to the many attractions this area of France is famous for. So the decision was made to make it available as a high quality gite. Le Colombage opened its door to visitors in March 2009.
