Canaules is a typical French village - small but full of character. It is close to a number of larger villages and small towns as well as numerous vineyards - many of which welcome visitors. Guests are very welcome to come and check out our own vineyard at Domaine d'Espere which is just over a mile away. Nimes, Montpellier and Marseilles are just 3 of the cities which are easily reached as well as the beaches on the coast or the skiing in the Cevennes. Please visit our website for detailed information about the many attractions and places worth visiting in the Languedoc region. There is one small shop/bakery in Canaules where you can get your fresh baguettes, croissants etc each morning. To find it just walk down the village past the town hall and the post office and take the only left turn that you see. To walk from La Bastide des Lavandieres to the shop/bakery takes about 3 minutes. Supermarket nearby in Lezan (5 minute drive approx). Please ask for our website for more information.

Notes on accommodation
The apartment is electrically heated. There is no requirement for air-conditioning as there are 3 foot solid stone walls in the apartment. This ensures that during Summer the apartment never gets too warm. In Winter the solid stone walls have the opposite effect. They help to retain the heat so that the apartment never gets too cool. The ground floor location means that this apartment is ideal for families with young children or for anyone with reduced or limited mobility.

Our caretakers Wendy & Andre can provide baby sitting services in addition to a number of other pre-bookable options including food upon arrival & during your stay ( 24 hours notice required ) , airport pick-ups & drop offs , Party catering , taxi service to local bars / restaurants & a pre-arrival shopping service where you provide a list of required items which will be in your apartment and ready for you when you arrive.

Accessibility
Although the apartment has not been specifically adapted for wheelchair users it is still quite suitable. There is a mobile wheelchair ramp available to allow entrance and exit from the apartment and because the interior of the apartment is very large it ensures ease of movement for wheelchair users.

Outside
There is a very large private terrace with this apartment with table and chairs for outdoor dining. On the terrace also you will find a brick build barbecue. The terrace itself leads on to a fully enclosed paved area at the front of the building containing the kid's play area and more tables and seating for outdoor dining or a casual glass of wine. The terrace is bathed in sunlight in the late afternoons and evenings and it has a clear view of the swimming pool so that children can be supervised while swimming. Just beside the apartment there is a private car park where you can park your car safely. The swimming pool is 12 x 6m in size. It slopes gently so that there is a shallow flat area suitable for young children. It is fully enclosed with secure fencing and a security gate for your safety and the safety of children in particular. There is a pool house beside the swimming pool containing changing facilities , outdoor shower & a small bar/café open in the afternoons and evenings.

Coast/Beach
The beaches of the coast are approx an hours drive away. However there are a number of lake beaches closer as well as some excellent river swimming locations as well. Newly opened is a really nice man-made sandy beach at Alés ( just 15 minutes drive) . The beach which is officially open from early June until the end of August has some excellent facilities including shallow water swimming, showers, a lifeguard, beach volleyball, boules, pedal boating, kayaking, a café bar & a restaurant.

Golf
There are 8 different golf courses within 1 hours drive. The closest to the apartment is a bit of a novelty. It is a 6 hole golf course located in the woods at nearby Ribaute-les-Tavernes. For serious golfers however the other 7 golf courses are all worth playing if time allows. Among them are Golf de Nimes - Vacquerolles, Golf de Montpellier - Massane and Golf de La Grande-Motte. Please ask for website details for information about all golf courses in the Languedoc region.

Skiing
You'll find plenty of skiing and ski slopes in Languedoc in two mountain ranges - the Pyrenees and the Cevennes. Realistically the Pyrenees are too far away but the Cevennes are right on your doorstep. Less than 1 hours drive from the apartment you can be on the slopes of the Cevennes. Not as high or as developed as ski resorts in the Pyrenees they do still have some stunning cross-country skiing and down-hill runs. Mont-Aigoual which is the biggest and nearest resort at Altitude 1200-1500m has 14 downhill runs totaling 142km and 12 cross-country and 7 Nordic trails. There are also 4 other smaller resorts nearby. Please ask for website details for information about skiing in the Cevennes.

Special interest holidays
Guests at La Bastide des Lavandiéres are welcome to visit our vineyard in the nearby village of Saint-Jean-de-Serres where we provide vineyard tours and the opportunity to taste our wines. Depending on the time of year there may also be the opportunity to try your hand at a little work on the vines. We can also organise tours to other vineyards in the region and during the low season in particular we can put together a 4 or 5 day schedule for groups to come and stay in the apartments and experience at first hand the local wine and food industry. Visit local vineyards, speak with some of the most exciting wine makers in the world and sample their wines. Each day also you will get to visit a different restaurant and experience different styles of cooking. If you have a group of your own please contact us and we can work out a schedule and a budget to suit your requirements.

Travel
The closest airport is Nimes (approx 35 minutes drive) other nearby airports include Montpellier (approx. 1 hour), Avignon (70 minutes), Beziers (90 minutes), Marseilles (2 hours) and Carcassonne (2 hours). Not quite as close but still within 3 hours are Girona ( Spain ) & also Rodez & Grenoble . Please visit our website to download full driving directions from all local airports.

Distances
La Bastide des Lavandiéres is located centrally in the village of Canaules. Canaules is approx a 15 minute drive from Anduze (known as the Gateway to the Cevennes). There are other smaller towns nearby also (within 20 minutes) as well as the city of Ales just 20 minutes away which has everything you would expect to find in any large city.

Further details
Shopping: there is one small shop/bakery in Canaules where you can get your fresh baguettes, croissants etc each morning. To find it just walk down the village past the town hall and the post office and take the only left turn that you see. To walk from La Bastide to the shop/bakery takes about 3 minutes. You will also find a well stocked supermarket in nearby Lezan (5 mins away approx by car) as well as 2 large supermarkets (Lidl and Intermarche) a little further on in Saint Christol. Food and drink: While there are no restaurants or bars actually in the village of Canaules you are literally surrounded by other small villages and towns which have an abundance of places for eating and drinking. There's one small bar/restaurant in Saint-Jean-De-Serres which is just 2 kilometres away. Christian and Brigitte will make you very welcome when you tell them you are staying at the bastide. You can also get really good take-away pizza here. A little further on in Ledignan (5km's) there are a couple of places to eat and drink as well as another pizza take-away. For a selection of bars and restaurant's there is of course nearby Lezan which is just 4 kilometres away. Sauve (11km's away) has some very good restaurants hidden among it's narrow streets as has it's next door neighbour - Quissac (10.4km's from Canaules) where you will also find a nice fast food/take-away. So all in all - No shortage of choice as far as eating and drinking goes. For a real French experience you can take a short trip into the Cevennes mountains to the village of Monoblet where chef Eric in our favourite restaurant will look after you. It's the only restaurant in the village and it is directly across the road from the village pub so you can't miss it . For family dining ( especially if you have young children ) then a 15 minute drive will bring you to Anduze where you will find a selection of nice restaurants on both sides of the main street as well as some hidden gems among the little side streets.

Owner profile

About the owner
We live in Ireland but try to spend as much time as possible in Canaules because we just love the place, the surrounding area and especially the local people who we have found to be so friendly and welcoming. Our caretakers Wendy & Andre also love living in Canaules and looking after our guests. They have made many welcome additions since they arrived including our new and very popular poolside bar / café where our guests tend to meet up and get to know each other in the evenings.

Year purchased: 2007

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
We initially bought the property mainly because it is located so close to our vineyard in the next village (Saint-Jean-de-Serres). When purchased the building was derelict and had been for some considerable time. So even though it involved a major renovation project to get it to the required standard we felt that because of the lovely area in which it was located within the Languedoc wine producing region it was a project worth taking on. We had the usual frustrations and set backs during the renovation and times when we felt like tearing our hair out because of the lack of progress but now that everything has been completed we know it was all worthwhile. We have a lovely building. It is the centrepiece of the village where once it was just an eyesore and simply put - we just love it.

Unique benefits of the property
Just 30 minutes drive from the motorway - La Bastide des Lavandieres is easily reached from any of a number of regional airports. It is that 30 minutes that makes the difference because there is a noticeable difference in the pace of life in our little village compared with the large tourist towns or busy cities. Here you will find peace and tranquility among the vineyards with the convenience of having 2 large cities (Nimes and Montpellier) just a short drive away. Located as we are just an hour away from the coastal beach resorts in one direction and the same distance away from the ski resorts of the Cevennes in the opposite direction we are uniquely positioned to allow you to experience both during your stay. Along with this all guests are welcome to come and visit our vineyard also.
