Inside, watch a DVD or one of 40+ UK Freeview TV stations or listen to the radio. However, if you want something more energetic, there are 4 bikes (you are surrounded by quiet country lanes) or there is tennis or football pitch just 100mtrs away. Also try canoeing, kayaking or horse riding (all 10 mins away) or try out go-carting or even paint balling in Bergerac. There's lots to do including sampling the many Wine Chateaux of St Emilion and Bordeaux located all around the area. Alternatively, just relax in the garden with a glass of wine and a good book.

Further details
There is a wealth of things to do and see in the area. Here are some of our favourites: Castles, Caves And Medieval Towns - There are large medieval Chateaux at Bannes (SE of Bergerac), at Beynac on the River Dordogne Nr Dommes, in Duras and at Puymatin Nr Sarlat La Caneda. The Caves and cave paintings at Les Eyzies, especially at the Font-de-Gaume, are very special. Medieval towns and villages abound and are within easy reach of Maison Soleil. Ste Foy La Grande, Libourne and Bergerac are 'Bastides' (walled 12th century towns built by the English) and are well worth a visit. St Emilion is a medieval treasure and just a magical place to visit and enjoy. A World Heritage site, you will want to visit again and again. Markets and History - In St Foy La Grande, there are numerous shops and Restaurants for you to explore and a traditional and extensive market (one of the top 50 in France) on Saturday morning providing lots of opportunities to find a bargain or two. Try also the Wednesday Market in Montpon (15miles NE) and in Castillon La Bataille (4miles W) on Sunday am. Castillon is where the last battle of the 100 years war was fought out in 1453 and this is re-enacted evey year (wkends July and August) with much pageantry, wine, food and fireworks. Wine Tasting - There is an huge choice of Wine Chateaux around Montcaret and wine tours and tastings can easily be arranged. Take the car Nth&Wst of Maison Soleil and loose yourself amongst the many wine chateaux in the wine growing villages around Montagne St Emilion and in St Emilion itself. Swimming, Cycling, Tennis or Horse Riding - Near Maison Soleil, there is easy access to quiet roads for cycling and there are tennis courts and a football pitch only 200 metres away. As well as the Splash Pool at Maison Soleil, swimming or fishing, canoeing and kyaking can all be undertaken by the River Dordogne. If you like Horse riding, there is an Equestrian Centre in St Antoine de Bruilh less than 10 minutes drive away.

"Very comfortable and relaxing place for a holiday with everything on your door stop. Lovely garden with resident squirrels and many intersting birds. Well recommended.
Excellent place for seeing the best of the Dordogne. A week is not long enough so we will be going back for longer next year to see more. Mayfield Family. June 08.
We had a great holiday and found Maison-Soliel a beautiful and well equipped home, it was such a delight to reach after our 24 hour journey to get there! Credit to yourself and Mrs Gaskell for providing such a comfortable, well equipped lovely home. Also a great location to explore this lovely part of France. Roberts family Aug 2008.
'This is a piece of Heavan on Earth. A beuatiful well kept home in a lovely quiet location. We loved everything about it including the large splash pool overlooking the Vineyards. We have booked for 2010 already as 1 week just wasn't long enough'. KS. Sept 2009.

Owner profile

About the owner
I have been married for 20 years, have two teenage children and live near Preston in Lancashire. I have worked in the public sector for 37 years and work in project management. I enjoy good food and wine and like to travel in Europe and the USA.

Year purchased: 2003

Why the owner chose a home in this location
I have loved everything French since touring France in the early 80s and have spent holidays in the country every year since then. This part of the Dordogne is particularly attractive to us as it is close to lots of countryside with pretty villages and towns to explore and is within easy distance from every type of shop and many Restaurants. Nevertheless, Maison Soleil is on a quiet country lane with only passing local traffic and the odd tractor. The gardens are secluded and quiet and overlook adjacent fields and vineyards and the whole area is very pleasant. Gentle back roads suitable for cycling run down to a small village and cafes on the banks of the river Dordogne.

Unique benefits of the property
We have lovingly restored the house since we bought it in 2003 and it has had lashings of TLC since then. I hope this shows through in the attention to detail and level of comfort it now provides and that those who stay in our French home will enjoy it as much as we do. Everyone comments on how comfortable the house is overall - especially the beds! Maison Soleil has plenty of space for 1 or 2 families or for just a few people to spread out. We have added mobile air-conditioning units for when it is hot as well as good heating and a really great log burning stove for the cooler months. There is plenty to do with or without children both in the house and in the surrounding area. You can also watch Satellite TV or a selection of DVDs if the sun decides to have a day off.
