Outside terraces with barbecue and fully equipped for eating/relaxing also courtyard for cool relaxing for 6. An ideal base for exploring this richly-historic region of France the Cathar castles of Puivert, Puilaurens and Axat being within 20 mins drive; Montsegur the site of last Cathar massacre is a few kilometres further. Coming back to the 21st century, there are two internet cafes so you will be able to stay in touch with the rest of the world.

75 minutes drive from Mediterranean coast - Canet Plage, Argeles sur mer, La Barcares and Collioure all with miles of sandy beaches. Perpignan, with great shopping, restaurants etc. is only 1 hour away. Spain or Andorra are about 2 hours away.
Golf
Championship golf course at Carcassonne 55 minutes drive away.
Skiing
Skiing at Camurac only 35 minutes away. Ax-Les thermes, Les Angles, Monts d'Olmes and Font Romeu all within one hour and a half.
Travel
Good motorway routes from channel ports, low-cost airlines fly to Carcassonne (55 mins away), Perpignan (60 mins), Toulouse (90 mins). Quillan has a rail connection to Carcassonne and thence to TGV at Toulouse or Perpignan though use of a car is recommended. Care hire facilities at all airports.

With an annual 300 days of sunshine and ski slopes and walking trails to suit all abilities, the Aude region offers a variety of activities all year round. If the hot weather of July and August is not for you, the mild and warm months of Spring and Autumn are perfect for sight seeing, walking, cycling and even a dip in the Med. Quillan has a number of stations for canoeing and white water rafting and adjacent lakes for swimming and sailing. National water sports events are frequently held here and the Tour de France regularly passes through the vicinity and actually visits the town on alternate years (2010) Nearby castles of Puivert, Puillarens, Queribus.
The town has a number of good restaurants and bars serving bistro food. There are several boulangeries - the best of which is just 3 minutes walk away - and all other shops and banks one would expect in a thriving French market town. There are estate agents to consult should you be tempted to buy a property in this beautiful area. Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days selling local produce and craft items and during July and August there is also a night market on Thursday.
A small cinema shows all the latest films (generally dubbed) and a small theatre is the venue for concerts and exhibitions. In the summer months entertainments are held in one of the town's two squares most weeks.
As the largest wine producing area of France there are many opportunities for tasting, especially Minervois, Rivesaltes and Blanquette de Limoux.
You can take a train from the Quillan local station to Carcassonne and various stops along the way. There is also a bus which will take you to Perpignan for shopping and for a one euro fare you can catch a connecting bus to Canet Plage for a day at the coast.
Quillan is recommended in many holiday guides as the perfect base for outdoor activities and the gateway to mountain, coast and the rich history of medieval France.
