Accessibility
The house is not suitable for people with serious mobility problems because of steps, the staircase and the upstairs bathroom.

Distances
Faugères is a picturesque village in one of the prettiest areas of the Languedoc in the south of France and located within the Haut Languedoc Natural Park. It is less than 15 minutes drive from the towns of Hérépian and Bédarieux which have all services and supermarkets. It is 30 minutes from the historic towns of Béziers and Pézenas, 40 minutes from the Mediterranean beaches.
Further details
The area is good for walking, cycling and mountain biking, with plenty of choices straight from the house. There are Land Rover tracks and footpaths in the area and maps in the house. The local roads are quiet for cycling.
If you drive north for 20 or 30 kilometres there are many dramatic walks in the mountains and gorges of the Caroux and the Espinouse. The Gorges d’Héric is popular with its crystal clear swimming holes but there are many other quieter gorges to choose from. The nearby Orb River is popular for swimming, canoeing/kayaking (around Roquebrun) and fishing.
Faugères is handy for the historic towns of Pézenas and Béziers. Pézenas has an all day street market on Saturday and Béziers has a market on Friday morning. Pézenas is known for its antique trade, craftsmen, artisans and for its secondhand shops. There is an interesting cultural walking tour through the XVI-XVII century city streets of old Pézenas and many cafes to choose from. Around Faugères there are many small, pretty villages often with markets once a week.
The Languedoc Roussillon region is largest vineyard in the world with many famous appellations such as St Chinian, Minervois and Faugères. It is possible to take a wine tour with a local operator.
Further away, visit the Cathar country with its history of the Albigensian Crusades and Cathar Castles to explore and go on to Carcassonne a complete restored historic walled city and world heritage site. Carcassonne is about 1.25 hours away.

Guest comments
'Extremely comfortable and relaxing place to stay, good local walking and excellent base for days out.'
'Just to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at your lovely house in Faugères. We had a great time throughout our weeks stay and would highly recommend you to anybody wishing to visit your part of France.'
'We thought the house was great, ideally situated to relax and unwind, and to explore Faugères and the surrounding area. Faugeres itself is a charming village, full of charm and so inviting to explore the narrow winding streets. Combined with the time spent relaxing and exploring the wonderful countryside in every direction, we did not have enough time to see everything we would have liked to, a good reason for a return visit in the near future!'

Owner profile
Enjoying the sunshine!
About the owner
We love outdoor activities including camping, walking and cycling. The climate in the South of France is perfect for this and the Faugères area has 300 days of sunshine a year. We used to operate a walking holiday company, offering tours in Scotland, Nepal, the Faroes, Greece and the USA. Although we no longer do this, we enjoy taking advantage of all the lovely sunny walks which this area has to offer.
We have swapped houses on several occasions, sometimes with other people who list on Owners Direct. This has usually worked very well for all concerned and lets you take a cheap holiday in an area that you might not otherwise have discovered. It was a very economical way for us to travel in Western Australia and we were very impressed with how kind and thoughtful the other owners were.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
The Faugères area has really good access to walks, cycling, airports, beaches and many interesting and historic towns including Béziers, Pézenas, Olargues and Montpellier.
There are lots of friendly local markets where you can buy the freshest of produce. There are some spectacular gorges nearby, including the famous Gorges d'Héric and Colombières.
We like that the village is right at the edge of the change of landscape from the vineyards to the evergreen oak covered hills.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is modern and easily kept. When we were looking for a property in France we stayed in several older houses and we are pleased that we chose a house like ours rather than a more traditional stone-built village house. Although these look pretty, they can often be difficult to maintain and not so bright inside nor so well insulated.
Although the house is not huge, it feels spacious because of the open-plan design and the high cathedral ceiling in the main living area.
The kitchen is well-equipped with a Scholtes combination gas and electric cooker. There is a good selection of books, games and maps of the area. UK satellite TV and French digital channels are available. There is Wi-Fi reception throughout the house and speakers that you can plug your iPod or MP3 Player into.
