Notes on accommodation
All furniture is comfortable and practical, much of it is antique. There is a carved stone staircase leading from the large entrance hall to the upper floors. Many of the beds are antique but all have modern comfortable mattresses with duvets and blankets. There is a large inglenook in the kitchen which is great in the winter. Caretakers can provide logs if required. Pets sometimes accepted in low season by prior arrangement and at a supplement £50 pw + extra damages deposit. Out of high season larger groups may like to rent the cottages too, by prior arrangement only. We will take an extra 2 in the Chateau (ie total of 14 people regardless of age) at a supplement of £65 pp pw. Utilities payable out of peak season.
Accessibility
The property was built in a time when accessibility issues and building regs didn't exist but as far as is possible everything conforms to proper safety standards. We have a small ramp for the back door for wheelchairs, but there is no ground floor bedroom. Both carved staircases are quite long and fairly steep but we have fitted child gates to the top of both.
Outside
There is about one hectare of garden set within eight foot high stone walls. Some of the garden is laid to beds at the front but loads of space for ball games etc. So long as you keep the gates shut it is entirely child proof. There is a kiddies play ground with swings, slide, sand pit etc. The pool is 12 x 6m set in a great sun trap and fully decked with sun beds and parasols. It is fenced and gated to keep the littlest where they should be. Solar heating is being installed, due for completion by mid-April. The two barbecues are close by, one is gas and the other a huge conventional charcoal burner. These are situated next to the outdoor dining area which overlooks the pool. There is room for several cars within the grounds.
Coast/Beach
The area boasts 50 miles of beaches, 3 islands, 3 golf courses, horse riding and forests leading down to the sea. There are numerous old ports and towns with many restaurants.
Romans left an amphitheatre and other buildings. Napoleon had fortifications built on every strategic point. The beach at Marennes is a giant man made sea lagoon ideal for kids. Beaches on the island of Oleron and the Cote Sauvage are well known for surfing. Naturist beaches on Oleron and in the Medoc nearby.
Golf
There are 3 golf courses within half an hour or so, Saintes, Oleron and Royan which has sea views from some areas.
Travel
Ryanair, Flybe and Easyjet fly to La Rochelle leaving from Stansted, Gatwick and/or Southampton and sometimes it is as cheap as a pound plus taxes.
Distances
Beaches 4 miles, village 1/4 mile, Marennes for main shopping 4 miles, Ronce les Bains tourist seaside town 9 miles, Saintes for lovely town and Roman history 20 miles, Royan for nightlife, seaside fun and restaurants 20 miles. Ile d Oleron (free bridge) for huge beaches, sea food restaurants 8 miles, Rochefort old military town with loads of history 12 miles, Cote Sauvage (wild coast) surfing and beaches (some naturist) 10 miles.

Owner profile
About the owner
We chose this area for its excellent climate, offering warm, lazy spring and autumn days as well as long hot summers. There is something for every age group in the general area, the beaches being a particular attraction. We bought this huge old place in 1995 and restored it ourselves. Old properties, dating to the 17th century - lots of ancient beams, fine old tiled floors and so on. We have hosted all sorts from ordinary folk to Lords and Ladies and famous personalities and have received lots of excellent reports. We have our own house not far away are there all summer and off and on the rest of the year. Staff always available if there is anything you need.
