The villa is one in a small development of traditional 'bergerie' style houses built on a hillside. It is situated on the top level of the development to make the most of the stunning view over the village with its ruined, medieval castle and across to the distant hills. The open plan living room has large French doors which open onto the south-facing pool and outdoor space, which includes a hardwood deck and both sunny and shaded terraces. Kitchen and bathrooms are fitted to a high standard and furnishings are of high quality.

Changeover day
Changeover day is Saturday. Arrival time from 4pm and departure time before 10am.

Accessibility
Access to the property is via a short flight of steps and the villa is therefore unlikely to be suitable for people with restricted mobility. It is also not advised for very young children, as the two bedrooms are at opposite ends of the house and there are stairs to bedroom 2.
Outside
Private pool 7.5 x 3.8m. Living room and bedroom 1 have French doors opening onto the hardwood decking pool surround. Step down to terrace. Table and chairs, sun loungers, barbecue. Shaded area. South-facing, stunning views. Small walled garden area to front of property with olive tree and local 'garrigue' plants.
Coast/Beach
The fine white sand beaches of the Mediterranean are a 30 minute drive away. Nearest are the blue flag beaches of La Franqui and Leucate.
Travel
Budget airlines fly to a number of airports within easy reach: Perpignan, Carcassonne, Nimes, Beziers, Montpellier, Toulouse and Girona. Perpignan and Carcassonne are closest at under an hour. There is a motorail service from Calais to Narbonne (30 minutes drive).
Distances
The village of Durban-Corbieres is just a few minutes walk down the hill. There is a supermarket (with petrol), bakery, pharmacy, newsagent, bank and post office. The village has one bar and restaurant, with a number of others in nearby villages, including a Michelin starred restaurant at Fontjoncouse, just a few kilometers away.

The area offers a wealth of things to do and see, for example:
*Durban is situated on the 'Sentier Cathare', a well-known walking trail. The lofty, romantic ruined castles of the Cathar sect are within easy reach, the closest being Aguilar, Queribus and Peyrepertuse.
*There are ancient monasteries at Lagrasse and Fontfroide.
* The historic walled city of Carcassonne, a world heritage site, is less than an hour away.
* The Canal du Midi meanders through the countryside to the north.
* the African Reserve at Sigean, an extensive wildlife park, can be reached within 30 minutes.
* Durban is in the centre of the wine region of Corbieres, with Fitou and Minervois also close by. There are countless small, and some larger, winegrowers offering wine-tasting and sales from their chateaux and 'caves'.
* The Catalan city of Perpignan is an hour away.
* The ski resorts of the Pyrenees can be reached in 2 hours.
* Barcelona is just over 2 hours away.
Booking notes
A booking deposit of 20% is required. The balance is payable 8 weeks prior to arrival. You will also be asked to provide a security deposit of £250 which will be refunded within 14 days of the end of your visit.

About the owner
Nick and I live with our two sons in Bedford, England. Nick still works full-time as a solicitor, and I am a French teacher (which comes in useful!), but nowadays I just do a little occasional supply work. Our "pie in the sky" wish for a number of years was to own a home in France, and after much exhaustive (but highly enjoyable!) research this dream came true for us in January 2008 when we took ownership of our brand new villa.
We loved the traditional building style coupled with the modern, open feel of the interior, we loved the idea of having our own pool and we particularly fell for the amazing view - I can sit and just look out of the window for hours!

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We considered various areas of France but decided on Durban-Corbieres for a number of reasons, apart from the house itself. We like being in a wine-growing area - Durban is a working, farming, wine-producing village surrounded by vineyards - the proximity to the coast, the mountains and the ski resorts, the short trip to Spain, the nearby cities of Carcassonne, Perpignan with its colourful Catalan identity and Narbonne with its amazing food market (where we've watched the locals enjoying horse meat and red wine for breakfast!) We love the vastness of the skies and the hills, the climate (more hours of sunshine than the Cote d'Azur), the endless possibilities for walking and the wealth of local restaurants - every village has its own little gem.
