In winter we offer catered holidays; in summer, self-catered or B&B. Our 3 storey house was originally an old farmhouse. The stunning top floor features an open plan living and dining area, with amazing views up and down the Tarentaise valley across to the distant peaks of Mont Blanc. Balconies open off 2 sides of the house from picture windows. The airy living room has huge, squashy sofas, a log fire and an extensive library. Situated at 1150 metres on one side of the Tarentaise Valley, we're in a great spot for winter and summer alike. In winter we are right at the heart of Paradiski with over 400kms of pistes. In summer there are miles of paths and trails to explore; the GR5 walking route goes right past the house and the entrance to the Vanoise National Park is on the doorstep. A cycle piste runs along the river, and challenging road routes lead into the mountains and over the cols. Mountain bike trails are aided in July and August by the lifts that take you and your bike up high.

Notes on accommodation
In winter the chalet is catered, with big breakfasts; afternoon tea and cakes (current favourite: lemon drizzle); and three course evening meals with wine. Contact us for more details.
During the summer the chalet is rented on a self-catering basis, but B&B and evening meals can also be provided: contact us for more information.
Outside
The large balcony has comfortable seating for you to sit and admire the stunning views across to the distant Mont Blanc.
Coast/Beach
The area has 3 of the largest lakes in France: Lake Annecy (about an hour's drive); Lac du Bourget (1.5 hours) and Aiguebelette (1.5 hours). Each lake has beaches and boating, backed by stunning mountain scenery.
Golf
There is a local golf course at Arc 1800, as well as courses at Tignes and Courcheval. Further afield Annecy has several good golf courses (about an hours drive)
Skiing
We are in the heart of the Paradiski skiing domain: 400km of pistes, 2 equipped glaciers, and runs to suit all abilities. Our side of the valley, La Plagne, has over 224km of pistes and 10 resort villages: we are located at Montchavin. Montchavin was originally a farming village and has charming cobbled streets, old stone buildings, and apple orchards. One chair lift takes you to the Vanoise Express cable car crossing the valley to Les Arcs: so guests can ski each side of the mountain easily.
Pretty tree lined tracks, wide open spaces, cruisy blue runs and a 2km black descent - the variety is enormous and you won't get bored.
Plagne 1800 is home to the Olympic bobsleigh run: this is open to visitors for a memorable evening's fun.
Travel
There are 4 possible airports near by: Chambery (1.5 hours drive). Geneva (2 hours drive). Grenoble (2 hours drive). Lyon St Exupery (2 hours drive). From Calais it takes about 10 hours to get here, mostly on motorways and major routes. Train: Trains from Paris to Lyon take only 5 hours. Get the eurostar to Paris and change to a TGV for a swift and comfortable journey.
Distances
Montchavin village (open December - April and July - August) is a 15 minute walk or 2 minute drive. In summer there is an open air swimming pool; guided mountain bike trips; and lots for children.
Bourg Saint Maurice with its restaurants, shops and open air swimming pool is a 15 minute drive.
Aime (Romanesque Basilica) is a 15 minute drive.
Further details
Walking: good walking can be enjoyed here from May to November, from valley walks and short to medium hikes through traditional villages and meadows, to challenging climbs up to Alpine pastures and snow fields. The Vanoise National Park is 15 minutes away by car, with its miles of tracks through protected landscape, featuring lakes, cols, rugged peaks and glaciers. Mountain Biking: the hills of La Plagne and Les Arcs have more than 100km of marked mountain bike tracks, and 6700 metres of vertical drop. Trails are graded in terms of difficulty. In summer the ski lifts open up the higher mountain trails to bikes, so your ascent is taken care of. Visitors can also try out parapenting or golf, climbing or quad biking, while the Isere river hosts white water rafting, body surfing, canoeing and fishing. July and August host Baroque concerts in the local baroque churches. In summer Montchavin village offers an open air swimming pool and an ice skating rink.

Owner profile
The family,summer 2011
About the owner
We are Andy and Liza, the owners of La Portette. Once dedicated city dwellers, we upped sticks from London in 2003 and moved to a tiny rural hamlet in a clearing in the forest on the side of a hill: Montorlin. When in 2002 we bought this house, we'd almost given up looking. Over 2 summers we'd seen modern houses, tiny sheds, old barns with the wind whistling through them, but nothing that made us gasp. As we stood at the foot of the house, the estate agent chattering to me in French about the 3 vaulted cellars, Andy jumped up and down at my side. 'This one? Does she mean this one?' That was it. Love at first sight. We married here in 2005 and had our first child here, Camille.
Year purchased: 2002
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We'd always loved La Plagne for the skiing: hire, varied and snow sure. As a keen walker I wanted somewhere beautiful to explore in the summers too, and as we intended to live out here, somewhere that had a life all year round. Montorlin changes with the seasons: wintersports in winter, cows and sheeps and goats in spring; walkers and mountain bikers, paragliders and watersports in summer; cows and sheep and goats again in autumn! Getting here is easy (getting away harder!) Autoroutes all the way to Albertville, A roads from there to Bourg St Maurice, smaller but well maintained mountain roads up the hill. Once here you are away from everyone. The valley stretches out below and in front of you, and its broad base means the surrounding hills don't oppress, just cradle you.
Unique benefits of the property
We looked up at the 4 storeys of house from the foot, and saw something original and charming: thick old stones, walls with no right angles, a curving tower (the staircase), all topped with a huge balcony. Inside we found character and modern plumbing; old beams and a new roof; nooks and crannies and a huge open living area. Each room has its own character. Downstairs is old with 3 foot thick walls and beamed ceilings. The room on the stairs has an original old door and amazing views. On the 1st floor the 3 bedrooms each have a different feel, from the white washed twin to the high wooden four poster and the traditional curtained cupboard beds. At the top of the spiral staircase the house opens up into light and space, with picture windows and supporting beams into the apex of the roof.
