Notes on accommodation
Anost has everything you need for day to day life. Two small shops, a boulangerie, boucherie, La Poste, a cash machine, several restaurants and bars, a takeaway pizzeria and even a cinema. The ancient Roman town of Autun, just 20 minutes away, boasts the spectacular St. Lazare Cathedral, the largest of its gothic style in Beaune, Couche, Chalon and Dijon are all accessible by car and approx 1 hour away. The impressive Lac des Settons provides watersports and is well worth a visit.
Accessibility
There is one bedroom downstairs and a downstairs bathroom. There are large patio doors, so I imagine the place to be suitable for anyone with mobility problems, but there are no specially adapted bathrooms or anything specifically for wheelchair users.
Outside
The house is wrapped in garden and patio, with steps down into the gardens from the south face and the west face. There are two main patio areas. One South facing, accessed from the kitchen, where there is a small breakfast table and chairs, and a small kitchen garden full of herbs and flowers. The larger brick paving patio is to the rear of the property and has breath-taking views of the valley, and a larger table and chairs. The sun follows the patio around as it wraps from south to west face. The terrace area also has a barbecue for those essential Summer evenings.
Golf
There is a golf course 20 minutes away in Autun, near the lake.
Special interest holidays
Walking, hiking, nature lovers, wildlife, camping, tranquil, 'get away from it all' breaks.
Travel
Paris Orly three hours away. Lyon St. Exupery two and a half hours away. Car needed to get anywhere further than the small village of Anost. There are also flights now available from the UK to Dijon.
Distances
Close to historic roman towns of Autun, Nevers and Saulieu, all twenty to thirty minutes away. One hour from Chalon sur Saone and wine growing regions, Couche, Mercurey, Beaune. An hour and a half from Burgundy capital, Dijon.
Further details
By Car. It's a straight run from Calais. Take the A16 to Paris, then the A6 all the way. Various sat navs will have you come off at the junction for Saulieu, but in my experience, it's quicker to stay on the A6 to junction 24, go to Autun, then head for Anost on the D978, which is the Chateau Chinon road. Anost is a right turn onto the D2. On reaching Anost, follow sign for Cussy, and Varin is a small commune just two minutes later. Look for a small lane on the left opposite a bus stop and a sign for 'potterie'. The house is the last house on the left at the top of the lane, next to a barn/stables. The other route is to bypass Paris, as the peripherique can be a nightmare, and take the A26 from Calais, then the A5 to Dijon. You can then head for Autun on the A38. By Plane. Dijon airport is due to begin flights from Stanstead, which will make getting here from the UK very easy. At the moment, the airports to use are Lyon (St. Exupery) and Paris Orly. Flights to Lyon are less in numbers. Paris Orly is a straight run up the motorway and takes three hours. Horse riding is available from Anost. Watersports are available at both Autun lake and Lac des Settons. Hiking and dog walking is right on your doorstep. Couche castle is amazing. Autun is ok for shopping, but Chalon is much bigger and better. Plenty of bars and restaurants there too. Dijon is worth the trip. Directions are provided as best as possible but you are expected to be responsible for getting yourself to the house! Consult Google Earth, Google maps, viamichelin, sat nav and maps! Postcode is 71550, France. House is in tiny commune called Varin.

Guest comments
We got back last night still carrying our perfect memories with us. We had a fantastic holiday in Varin, the house was a jewel and the location was magical. We explored the local area, the parks, the lakes, Autun and did a couple of wine trips to Beaune and the surrounding area. We had a splendid time, enjoyed the beautiful landscape and loved the quiet evenings playing pool and drinking wine in your homely kitchen. My 12 year old daughter was overjoyed to have a pool table and she spent long hours playing with my husband and our friends. Thank you for the wide choice of books, games, music, local information, it all contributed to a perfect, memorable holiday. - October 2011
Owner profile
About the owner
Hi, My name's James, and I own the villa you're looking at. I moved to France in 2005 to live there full time. I had a different career then as a Feature Writer and worked from home. I could live in France and work wasn't affected. However, I changed career, being unhappy with the UK press and the world of journalism. I retrained as one of France's Owner Trainers for owners of 'dangerous breeds' of dog. If you wish to own a Rottweiler for example, the laws mean you have to go on a course and learn about dog behaviour. But the French didn't take to the new laws and so I advertised in the UK as a dog behaviourist and was pleased to get a lot of enquiries. I now have years of hands on experience and returned to the UK full time in 2009, hence house for rent.
