Outside
More than 18 years in the making, the gardens offers the visitor an abundance of surprises, combining traditional features of English garden design with others, more personal and eccentric; winding paths opening unexpectedly into long vistas framing a statue or a birdbath; paved areas using natural local stone set in mosaic patterns; box bushes shaped into globes, cubes and cones; secret places where the curious eye can discover a mosaic, a sculpture or a bas relief. A number of comfortable benches, set both in sunny and shady corners, offer ideal opportunity to relax with a good book, or enjoy the tranquillity of this secluded garden, and the profusion of wild birds which have made it their home, perhaps with a glimpse of our red squirrels, owls and (rather less welcome!) our visiting rabbits. To complete your enjoyment, teas, coffee, and afternoon cream teas can be served in the garden or on the terrace. A pair of bicycles are available for loan.

Further details
We are fortunate to have within easy reach three of France's most visited sites. THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY describes in graphic detail the most famous date in English history: 1066 and the invasion of England by William the Conqueror. It is housed in its own museum in the city of Bayeux, well worth visiting for its own sake.
Equally unique is the island monastery of LE MONT ST. MICHEL, with the winding streets of its medieval village culminating in a beautiful monastery, bathed in extraordinary light and with stunning views over the surrounding estuary.
Also drawing visitors from all over the world are THE D-DAY LANDING BEACHES, site of the Invasion of Normandy in 1944, and the immaculately tended cemeteries commemorating those who gave their lives to liberate France in the crucial battles of World War II.
Gateway to France for many English visitors using its ferry port each year, THE CITY OF CAEN, city of William the Conqueror, fell to an earlier English invasion as long ago as 1346, when only the Chateau held out! Though it suffered badly in the Battle for Caen in 1944, the city boasts wonderful churches, most notably the Abbaye aux Hommes (with William's tomb); the Chateau (built by William); a beautiful Botanic Garden; a Museum of Fine Arts with a good permanent collection; the Memorial (the Museum telling the story of the Battle of Normandy); and as befits a university town, a profusion of cafes, bars and restaurants.
Granville: a picturesque fishing port and holiday town full of good fish restaurants, with Christian Dior's clifftop museum and gardens.
Villedieu-les-poêles: 'poêle' means stove, and this popular tourist destination, with its granite houses and narrow hilly streets is famous for its copper products, with seemingly half its shops devoted to selling items in copper, and a museum devoted to the industry. Colourful local market on Tuesday mornings.

Guest comments
‘Gorgeous food, wonderful hospitality. This isn’t just a Bed and Breakfast…I felt cared for and looked after in a way no B&B I’ve ever known before would do. It felt more like staying in a hotel belonging to friends than an impersonal guest house.’ – Gwen Garfield-Bennet, Writer and Presenter, BBC TV, Jersey.

‘Food and hospitality need to be experienced to be believed. Krishna’s meals could not be equalled..’ Geoffry Marsh, artist.

‘The food is quite exceptional and of star quality. You both make a wonderful team and I feel I have been pampered and really spoilt….this is a holiday in a class of its own where everything has been thought of…wonderful- thank you both!
Christine Bell, artist.

About the owner
Krishna is your hostess, housekeeper and chef de cuisine. Once owner of an Optician's in England, she has now emerged as an outstanding cook, her reputation (fostered by editorials in the Normandy papers) drawing local people to her evening meals and lunches. Brian is your host and head gardener! After a career as filmmaker, writer and educator, has returned to his first love, painting, with exhibitions in Caen, Granville and Vire. He has devised inspirational courses at Arts in the Garden, for painters at all levels. Arts in the Garden, which opened in May 2008, is a joint creation: a house and gardens where the pleasures of good food and wine, painting and sculpture from all over the world and - not least - congenial conversation are to be savoured amongst friends.

Year purchased: 1980's

Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
This is one of the most picturesque regions of Normandy, and only an hour from the ferry at Caen, making travel from the UK really easy. It's also within easy reach of some of the most beautiful towns in France, such as Dinan, Bayeux and Honfleur, which we visit frequently, as well as Granville and Deauville. We're in a very quiet and peaceful area - 'la France Profonde!' and its two acres of good agricultural land were the perfect spot for building a garden. As well as the garden at the front of the house, there's a superb view of the hills at the back, with which we fell instantly in love. It's taken 20 years for us to really exploit that view, but now with our new Art Gallery and Dining Room, and the newgarden and terrace at the back, our visitors can at last enjoy this view as well.

Unique benefits of the property
Many visitors use us as a base for exploring the historic sites of Normandy - the D-Day beaches, Mont St. Michel, Bayeux, etc. and our central location make us an ideal base: you can spend a good 7 days here before you run out of places to visit! Others, however, arrive here quite stressed out with work and travel and just chill out - relaxing in the garden, enjoying the good food and congenial company, and in effect becoming friends. It's also possible to take one of our informal courses here - in drawing and painting, mosaic or indian cookery...so you need never be bored!
