Summer

Conveniently situated a short walk from the town centre in the residential part of the beautiful and historic Alpine village of Samoens. The chalet is well located for the restaurants and shops in Samoens and the ski lift (the bus stops close nearby - a brief trip to the lifts). All the beds and furnishings are well appointed and the well equipped kitchen makes this a real home-from-home. A short drive from Geneva, Samoens is a picturesque medieval Alpine village which is the only ski village to be listed in the French National Office of historic monuments. The town is part of the Grand Massif ski area offering a wide variety of skiing with fantastic panoramic views of Mont-Blanc. In the summer, the area becomes a haven for those seeking stunning panoramic views including waterfalls, wildlife, fauna and flora. For energetic visitors in the summer there’s golf, cycling, swimming, parapenting - the list is exhausting and offers plenty of fun and relaxation for all!

Notes on accommodation
This is a traditionally constructed chalet (50 years old) which is heated in the winter by oil-fired stove (there are additional heaters in the bedrooms but we rarely use them). We recommend the chalet for up to 6 adults - the bedrooms are all well sized and the chalet easily sleeps 8 - and whilst the living area easily accommodates 8, there the living area is quite tight for eight adults. The shutters keep the chalet warm in winter and the bedrooms cool in summer. There are two master bedrooms which are a good size with ample storage. The beds are all very comfortable - both master beds have memory foam. The soft towels and the white cotton sheets gives that added feeling of luxury.

Accessibility
The downstairs bedroom provides excellent accommodation for guests who prefer not to use stairs (Granny recommends it!). There are two steps to the chalet door and we don't think it is suitable for wheelchair access.

Outside
The sitting room opens out onto a small terrace with access to the garden. There is a garden seat on the terrace allowing for winter sun-bathing whilst, in the summer, the teak dining furniture allows for alfresco dining late into the evening. The views from the chalet are wonderful - with waterfalls and the imposing mountains all around. The trees give welcome shade from the heat in the summer. There is a small privately owned field/orchard to the front of the chalet and some other chalets around. Walking from the chalet takes you to the river (500m away) and these lanes are relatively quiet. The chalet is situated on the side of the only road to the Sixt Fer a Cheval National Park at Sixt - this road gives excellent access to all the main routes and saves the risk of being snowed-in in winter. The ski bus stops nearby the chalet and provides a swift trip to the Grand Massif ski lift (5 mins max) which we think is easier than taking the car.

Golf
There are a number of golf courses in the area although you will need to travel. There is a golf driving range at the lake in Samoens.

Skiing
The chalet is five minutes from the Grand Massif Ski lift. The lift enables rapid transit to Samoens 1600 which then links into the Grand Massif Ski area. The ski bus stops just around the corner from the chalet and makes regular transfers to the main ski lift - it's so convenient, we find it is easier than using the car. The chalet is also situated 30 minutes from the Portes de Soleil (including les Gets and Morzine) ski area and 45 minutes from Chamonix.

Travel
550 miles from the EuroTunnel at Calais (approx. 8 hour drive) - directions available.
50 minutes drive from Geneva Airport.
We can arrange for airport transfers on your behalf. A car is not necessary in the winter (indeed, we hardly use ours) but it is useful in the summer to enable touring of the area. However, many people just hire a bicycle and save the cost of car hire.

Further details
Catering can be arranged to include evening meals - a sample menu is available on request but meals need to be booked in advance. This service has been highly recommended by previous guests.

A creamery/fromagerie is situated a short walk from the chalet. The town is not far away with a host of shops, restaurants and bars. We can provide you with a map of supermarkets, restaurant suggestions, etc.

Samoens has a wonderful outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and a multitude of summer sporting activities. The nearby village of Morillon/Verchaix has a great tree climbing area, parapenting is available from Samoens as well as white water rafting, well-marked walking routes - the list is endless!

Owner profile

About the owner
This chalet is owned by Mike and Allie - we both love skiing, walking and the alpine life! Mike loves entertaining and meeting people whilst Allie's the home maker and detail person. We have both been skiing since we were little so that makes it over 60 years skiing between us (please don't bother doing the maths..!)

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Have you heard about Samoens yet? It's a fantastic mix of traditional alpine village and ski resort. The village hasn't lost it's heart to pre-fab buildings and nightclubs. We llike the chalet location and prefer to use the ski bus rather than take our own car to the lifts. If it snows really heavily, being next to a main road means that we can always get in and out (although you might have to do some digging to clear the driveway). We really love Samoens in the summer and spend all our spare time out here. We can't ski as much as we like to as our jobs keep us very busy in the winter - it therefore makes sense to hire it out.

Unique benefits of the property
It's a quick walk to the town centre and, equally, its a short walk down to the river or to open fields. The property is conveniently located on the valley and there are no steep roads to navigate to get home. Located in a residential part of the village, the ski bus stops just around the corner. The excellent service makes it easier than using the car and it's only a few minutes ride to the lifts. The chalet is a second home - you'll find it has everything you need for a really relaxing holiday. The beds are really comfortable - we recommend that it will take up to 6 adults - yet the bedrooms will accommodate more (no need for a sofa bed or bunk beds here!). Yes, it's a little older in some places than others - but it's uniquely charming and provides a great home from home!
