From 1600 you can access the 265km of marked piste that constitute the Grand Massif ski area. The ski area extends from 800m to 2,500m and covers the villages of Samoens, Sixt, Morillon, Les Carroz and Flaine. There are 14 black, 51 red, 53 blue and 15 green runs. The area has an excellent snow record, however the natural snow can be topped up by over 200 snow cannon. There are also plenty of tree lined runs for when the weather closes in. There are over 90km of cross country trails either along the valley floor or at the top of the Col de Joux Plane at 1700m. There are also 60km of marked paths for snow shoeing. There is also an excellent ski kindergarten and creche.
Travel
Samoens is about an hours drive from Geneva airport. Car hire is easily arranged or transfers using the chalets minibus are normally available (depending on flight timings - free for fully catered weekly guests). Samoens is an easy 8/9 hour drive (536 miles) from Calais with all bar the last few miles on toll motorways (directions can be supplied). A free run to and from the ski lifts and ski hire shops will also be provided so a car is not essential. The village is a short walk away.
Distances
10-15 minute gentle stroll to the centre of the village. In under an hours drive you can be in Chamonix, Annecy or some of the towns on the shores of Lake Geneva such as Yvoire or Evian.
Further details
The whole village of Samoens has been classed as an historic monument. The village is steeped in history and retains its centuries old charm and traditions. Samoens has a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars and a cinema. There are several banks with cash points, a couple of pharmacies a medical centre and a tourist information. There is a large market that sets up every Wednesday morning throughout the year, whatever the weather. In the Winter as well as the skiing there are plenty of cleared paths for walkers.
There is also an ice rink and a motorised train that runs around the village. The active tourist office runs various events throughout the Winter and Summer seasons. In the Summer the area fills with walkers, cyclists and adrenalin junkies. There are over 900km of walking trails and 600km of marked mountain bike trails. The sky is dotted with parapents whilst canoes, rafts and body surfers make their way through the gorges and down the rapids of the River Giffre.
There is a large leisure area set around two lakes that is a short walk from the chalet. Here can be found an outdoor swimming complex, tennis courts, archery an adventure park through the tree tops and a golf driving range into one of the lakes. The whole area is filled with flowers and in the centre of Samoens is a century old botanical garden.

Owner profile
About the owner
Chalet Lamorna is owner run by husband & wife team Susan & Ian, with Ian mainly doing the driving, transfers, ski guiding and snow clearing. Susan tends to remain within the chalet, preparing the evening meals and making the welcome cakes for the returning skiers. Having led successful careers in London, we are now both semi-retired and have made our main home in Samoens. We aim to provide a personal and friendly service and will help you with every aspect of your holiday to ensure everything runs smoothly. Having stayed in catered chalets previously on holidays, we believe we know what works and what does not. Testimony to this is the number of returning guests that we have both during winter and summer seasons. It is not necessary to pay 5 star prices to receive a 5 star service.
Year purchased: 2008
Why the owner chose a home in this location
In 2002 we started looking for a holiday apartment within an hours’ drive of Geneva airport, suitable for Summer and Winter holidays. We made several appointments in Morzine, Les Gets, Les Carroz and Chamonix - we arrived in Samoens – then cancelled any further appointments as we had found the perfect place. We have had a property in Samoens since 2002. It really is the hidden gem of the Alps, with fantastic opportunities to try the many mountain activities, to simply stroll through the historic streets, or to just sit at a café and watch the world go by. We enjoyed our holidays in Samoens so much we upped sticks from London, sold our original Samoens apartment, and had Chalet Lamorna built. We moved in to Chalet Lamorna in December 2008.
Unique benefits of the property
Chalet Lamorna is within the Historic village of Samoens and it is only a 10-15 minute gentle stroll to the centre of the village. Chalet Lamorna is situated on the sunny south side of the valley. We have the most amazing views from the wrap around balconies & the stunning sun deck, not forgetting the views of the ski runs from the outdoor hot tub. Our aim is to offer a home from home, family friendly chalet, with home cooked food and a second to none customer service.
