'Chalet le Meleze', which has recently been modernised, sits in lovely grounds, "La Clairiere", with splendid views across St Jean de Sixt and the verdant valley down to Thones. 1 hour from Geneva, it is 3 minutes' drive to la Clusaz and 10 minutes to Grand Bornand. In winter, the ski buses to both resorts stop regularly by the entrance to La Clairiere. The chalet is well-situated for skiing and boarding in winter and hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and paragliding in summer - or for a quiet weekend getaway out of season. Sailing is available on Lake Annecy, 30 minutes' away. There is much to see and do all around and the area, although offering well-developed sporting facilities, remains unspoiled and still very French. All villages are still working and farming communities. Nearby Annecy, known as the Venice of the north, is an elegant, historic town worth visiting both for its beauty and its shops.

Notes on accommodation
The mezzanine is unsuitable for children under 5, as it has a balcony over the sitting room and is accessed by a pull down ladder (there is a cover when the ladder is down to prevent falling). But our slightly older children revel in being up there!
Outside
Le Meleze has its own garden, with table and chairs in summer.
The surrounding grounds are ideal for children, with plenty of space to run about or kick a ball. In summer, there is a children's play area and a trampoline, near the enclosed swimming pool (for the use of residents and their guests only), which is open mid-June to mid-September, is solar heated and has loungers and sun shades around it.
Coast/Beach
Lake Annecy has small resorts on both sides, with swimming, boats for hire and sailing. Our favourite place is Menton St Bernard, about 25 minutes' drive from the chalet., but Talloires is also pretty and popular.
Skiing
La Clusaz is 3 minutes' drive and has a new car park at the entrance to the village or regular ski buses which stop by the entrance to la Clairiere. This is a resort with 55 ski lifts accessing 132km of slopes, the highest of which is 2616m, catering for all levels of ski-ing and with excellent ski schools. The Grand Bornand and Chinaillon resorts, with over 200km of marked runs, is 10 minutes away and also served by the local ski buses.
Travel
Geneva airport in 1 hour's drive from the chalet or, if you have time, you can travel by train taking the Eurostar to Paris, changing station to the Gare de Lyon and getting the TGV to Annecy (3 hours). Car hire in Annecy is by the railway station.
If you are driving, allow 8-9 hours from Calais (possibly more on a busy summer weekend) or stop overnight in any one of a number of lovely French cities and villages.
Distances
La Clusaz is about 3km; Thones about 10km (better place than la Clusaz to do shopping - there is a big Champion and good butchers), Annecy is 30 minutes' drive and the big retail park the other side of Annecy (with a huge Auchan and excellent Decathlon among many others) is 45 minutes' drive.
Further details
St Jean de Sixt, which is 5 minutes' walk from the chalet, is a small village with everything you need, including two very good boulangeries, a supermarket, an excellent hardware shop, 2 delicatessens, and sports shops offering equipment rental.
The tourist office is friendly and helpful and posts weather forecasts daily on the door. There is also a 'logis' hotel just off the road, the Beau Site, which offers good inexpensive dinners and a variety of more up-market restaurants in la Clusaz, Thones and Annecy.
For guests interested in history, on the Annecy road out of Thones there is a museum on the French resistance movement in the area (Haute Savoie was a notable area of resistance in WWII) and a memorial to those killed on the nearby plateau des Glieres, also worth a visit in summer. Annecy is steeped in history and has a fine castle as well as the old city centre.
All the surrounding villages have weekly markets in summer (and some in winter), with local produce including the famous Reblochon cheese, which you can also buy from farms, usually marked on the roadside.
Summer activities are numerous and at all levels, from gentle strolls looking at flora and fauna on the lower slopes of the mountains, to vigorous hikes with the Randonnee maps available in the St Jean newsagent. Climbing courses and guides, mountain bike hire, canyoning, para-gliding and golf (slightly further afield) are all available, through the sports shops or the tourist office.
Booking notes
25% deposit of the agreed rental fee is required at the time of booking, with the balance due 8 weeks in advance. Payment is in £ sterling.
