Le Tilleuil is one half of an 18th century farmhouse with its own terrace, set in a large garden and one of 3 houses in the hamlet of Les Monneries. There is an above ground pool with decking where you can lie out. We are in the heart of beautiful forested countryside with gentle rolling hillsides on the edge of the Perigord Vert. It is a peaceful rural area with rivers and lakes for canoeing, boating and fishing. Visit the weekly markets in nearby towns and villages where you can meander and buy fresh produce and local specialities and then rest in a bar or café to sit and watch the world go by. For walkers, there are numerous quiet lanes, a nearby arboretum and woodlands with tracks. The local tourist offices have maps of the many signed walks and rambles through the lovely countryside and we keep a few at the house along with bikes for guests to make use of.

Golf
There are several golf courses in the area, the nearest being at Angouleme, an 18 hole well maintained municipal course, and Golf D'Aubeterre, a 9 hole course where relaxed golf is the order of the day. In the area, Cognac and La Preze offer good challenging courses with pleasant clubhouses and restaurants.

Travel
Limoges and Bergerac airports 1.5 hours and Bordeaux 2 hours. Le Tilleuil is 8 hours drive from Calais 6 hours from the other channel ports using the autoroutes via Tours and Poitiers.

Distances
The picturesque river town of Brantome (the Venice of the Perigord) is about 20 kilometres distance, Angouleme 30k, Cognac, Perigeux, St Emilion, Bordeaux, Poitiers, Limoges, Bergerac all 1-2 hours away. If you are house hunting we are near estate agents at La Rochebeaucourt, Mareuil and Villebois-Lavalette.

Further details
About 10 mins away is the small market town of Villebois Lavalette which boasts one of the oldest covered markets in the country under which is held a small local market every Saturday morning, filled with fresh produce of every description and when the market has gone you can sit and have a drink or dinner served by the nearby restaurant 'La Lavalettte'.

Villebois is dominated by a beautiful medieval chateau, with its turrets and a thousand years of history. Our nearest village is Mareuil where there is a good restaurant L'Olive Noire serving a la carte and pizzas. Le Rochefocauld has a beautiful chateau on the Charente river, Nontron and the villages in between are all worth a visit.

Angouleme, capital of the Charente area is not a massive town, however it has its own airport. The old town centre is built on a plateau which overlooks the Charente river. The narrow cobbled streets wind around the 19th century market and are full of atmosphere and include the Mairie, old churches and the Cathedral. There are good restaurants including Italian, Indian and Chinese.

The renowned classic/vintage car rally called Circuits des Ramparts is held in September each year in Angoulême (16th -18th this year). The racing of these old vehicles, as they scream around the ancient streets, reminds you of Monaco 50 years ago! Cognac where there are several brandy houses to visit is 1/2 hour East of Angoulême. Visit Bordeaux where Medieval and modern architecture sit side by side; the wonderful Bordeaux Law Courts designed by the British Architect Richard Rogers are located in the heart of the historic core of Bordeaux, near the medieval cathedral and form a backdrop to the imposing Neo-Classical Palais de Justice facing the Place de la République.

The city has great restaurants and you can shop til you drop. What variety we have, beautiful countryside, ancient towns, chateaux, history, sports, relaxation, good food, fine wine, a cosy farmhouse, so much to see and do.

Owner profile

About the owner
We lived in Somerset before moving to France but have both moved about a lot with work and family. Tony was an engineer in the Navy and afterwards ran pubs and restaurants in Southern England. I have lived all over the world from the West Indies to the Far East. I think France is almost the longest I have lived in one house. We both love the countryside, travelling and meeting people. Tony is a radio ham and chats to people in Russia and Canada over the airwaves, he likes mending machines, DIY and did all the renovations to the house. I enjoy sewing, gardening, waling, watercolour painting and renovating old bits of furniture. We love France and if our family was nearer it would be perfect.

Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
We bought our house in Spring 2002, did all the things they said you shouldn't and fell in love with the first house we saw, mainly because of the views and surrounding countryside. We had intended on buying in the north Charente but here on the border of the Dordogne we have rolling hills, woods and mixed farmland, quaint villages and the best of both departments on our doorstep. We came here to live permanently three years later and have just finished renovating as much of the property as we intend to, now we are going to enjoy life and explore France a bit more. We both enjoy having a chat and a laugh over a glass of wine or good meal with friends old and new. We enjoy the summer months with visitors from all over the world and hope you will enjoy your time with us too.

Unique benefits of the property
Our gite is set in tranquil countryside. The type of holiday you want depends on you: make it quiet and laze round the pool; active - walk and cycle the lanes and tracks or play golf nearby, or swim at nearby lakes; explore further afield the towns, villages and historical gems in Charente and Dordogne, or visit the distilleries and domaines to sample the cognac and wines on offer. The small towns of Mareuil and Villebois-Lavalette are only a short drive away for shopping, with supermarkets, butchers, bakers and weekly markets. We are only 20 minutes from Brantome the Venice of the Perigord a must place to visit, as are Aubeterre and St. Emilion. There is lots of info in the gite for you to plan your holiday.
