The designated recreation area is suitable for small children's play and sunbathing. It looks out onto the owners' private part of the garden and across into the fields and pretty stone farm buildings. The rest of the garden remains private, but the owners are always ready to take guests round if they should be interested. The kitchen garden can provide seasonal vegetables as well as herbs. A parasol, garden chairs, a small table and a barbecue are available for guests in the reserved area.

Coast/Beach
Many fine unspoilt sandy beaches on both east and west coasts. Nearest is 10 minutes' drive on the east coast, 1 hour's drive to the west coast. The coastguards' path runs along most of the coastline all round the peninsula. The beaches are extremely varied and most people enjoy taking a new path down to 'La Mer' every day. Detailed maps are provided to help find the small access lanes and roads. The tides go out quite far and at low tied children and adults will enjoy rock fishing.

Golf
There are two interesting 9-hole golf courses nearby, both about 30 minutes drive. The nearest is the links course at Fontenay on the sea-side road south from Quineville. Alternatively, there is the Golf Club (de Rochers) de Cherbourg at Glacerie Eglise. This is a beautiful course with wonderful trees and extraordinary views over Cherbourg harbour.

Guest comments
It's hard to find the right words to tell you how wonderful, better to say more than wonderful ("merveilleux"), our time at your house and garden was. SLC.
'We had the most wonderful time staying in your cottage in Normandy. Not only was the area fascinating and beautiful but the cottage and garden were the nicest we have ever stayed in. The cottage was beautifully decorated and provided everything we needed. We enjoyed eating outside in the lovely garden. The local neighbourhood was great for walks and days at the nearby beach. The D-Day sites and Bayeux were easy day trips away. It was the best holiday we have had in Europe and we would love to return someday.' S and RS

'We are desperate to return after a glorious week in your wonderful gite. AH

Owner profile

About the owner
I am English and my husband is French. The cottage we let is part of our old Normandy house where we have lived for 16 years. We are both teachers, Georges a primary school teacher and I a textile and patchwork teacher. Recently retired we can give more time to our different interests. I love my garden and work in it as much as possible. The vegetable garden supplies us and people in the cottage with wholesome and organic produce. We walk daily with our dog in the surrounding country tracks and lanes or on the wonderful open beaches. Georges paints in watercolours and I use textiles to create hangings which I exhibit regularly. The local seafood and excellent meat, and the vegetables and fruit in the markets are a delight to cook and we are happy to advise and help.

Year purchased: 1994

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought our house because my husband had been giving a teaching post here. We fell in love with the gentle countryside and the wonderful varied and wild coastline and did not hesitate to settle in a small hamlet where we see very little traffic and wake to the sound of sheep or cows. The countryside is unspoilt and the many hedges shelter a huge variety of animals and birds. Our garden is a haven for all as it is totally free of any chemicals. We find the peace and remoteness from the general rush of life, a very good way to live. At the same time we are only 5 minutes drive from excellent shops and a market, and within 10 to 15 minutes one is in the hustle bustle of a small harbour and onto long sandy beaches. It is an ideal place for small children, and young families feel safe.

Unique benefits of the property
Many of our guests have a feeling of 'coming home' when they return from a day out. The cottage is decorated very simply and the interior is pleasing as well as comfortable and unpretentious. Being cooks, we have provided a maximum of good equipment so that any guest can enjoy cooking the local products. As we have tried to keep the whole layout simple, guests find the cottage easy to keep clean and there is plenty of cupboard and drawer space. The garden area can easily be limited which enables parents to keep an eye on their children, and at the same time to look out on to the bigger garden and enjoy the surrounding countryside. Country tracks and lanes lead out of the hamlet and it is possible to go for a quick or a long walk. A five minute drive brings one to the nearest town.
