Nestling in its own large and attractive gardens, the house exudes peace and calm. Situated right on the edge of the pretty village of Huelgoat (pronounced 'Welgwat'), La Retraite is only a short walk from village shops, restaurants, swimming pool, tennis courts, and of course the famous picturesque lake and boulder-strewn forests that border it. The house itself has been furnished and equipped to a high standard to ensure a comfortable, hassle-free stay. For those staying with little ones, we have endeavored to make it as child-friendly as possible with stair gate, travel cot, toy box, games and more. There is also a small enclosed garden to the rear of the house leading from the billiard room where small children can play safely. Plenty to do and see in an area renowned for its natural beauty and forest walks (see website). Welcome hamper provided as well as a fully stocked bar to help you relax into the wonderfully slow pace of life that is synonymous with La Belle France.

Notes on accommodation
The property is ideal for large parties but equally is cosy enough to suit smaller parties. We have tried to make the house as child friendly as possible with stair gate, toy box, baby chair, high chair and small enclosed garden area. There is a very effective central heating system programmed to come on in the morning and evening as well as the log fire in the lounge. The house has been decorated and equipped to a high standard with beautiful bed linen and beautiful crockery, kitchenware and glasses. Lamps and rugs are scattered around the house to help create a feeling of warmth and an "at home" feeling. The kitchen and dining rooms both open out onto the long patio area which stretches the length of the front of the south-facing house and which leads down to the pretty gardens. There is a gate at the end of the driveway to the house which can be closed to ensure the property is totally enclosed. Picnic basket provided and plenty of picnic spots in this location.
Accessibility
Downstairs toilet but no bedrooms on the ground floor unfortunately.
Outside
The house is set in over an acre of gardens laid to lawn and studded with a variety of beautiful, mature trees. The entire front of the house is terraced and doors lead out from the dining room and kitchen. The terrace steps down to the gardens. Bar-b-que and outdoor furniture provided to include table and chairs and sun loungers. Wooden table and chairs under one of the huge trees and picnic basket also provided for those who might like to take lunch down near the lake or on one of the many beautiful forest walks.
No swimming pool but hoping to install one for the 2009 season.
Coast/Beach
There are also many beautiful safe sandy beaches within easy reach of Huelgoat including Primel-Tregastel and the surrounding coast, Carantec and Loquirec all on the north coast. To the south there are the beaches around Fouesnant and on the west there is a wonderful expanse of beach at Pentrez. All have cafes, bars and restaurants close by.
A bit further south will take you to Quimper which is a beautiful coastal town and further on still will bring you to the beautiful La Baule area.
Golf
There are many golf courses available in Brittany. Most famous is probably Val Andre, about 40 minutes drive away. But there is a number of nine hole and eighteen hole courses within 15 - 30 minutes drive away. Tennis courts also in the village.
Travel
Huelgoat truly is a treasure of a location and very accessible being 2 hours from St Malo, less than an hour from both the ferry port of Roscoff and Brest Airport and less than 45 minutes from the beautiful coast of Brittany.
Distances
The nearest large town is Carhaix. It has a very attractive centre with lots of interesting shops and a wonderful market on Saturdays (try the spit roasted pork stuffed with prunes!). Huelgoat's market is held in the village square on Thursdays. Morlaix is a wonderful, ancient town only 25 minutes away and it has a very good market on Saturdays also. During your stay we would also recommend that you take one (or all) of the many walks through the forest - there is even a creperie along one!.
Further details
Huelgoat is renowned as one of the most beautiful villages in Brittany and is also well known for its spectacular scenery, woodland walks, rock formations and caves which entice hundred of tourists each year. The village is only a five minute walk from the house, just down the lane and over a little bridge across the picturesque lake and you are there!
The 15 hectare lake was created between the 16th and 18th centuries to supply water to local silver-lead mines by means of a 3 km canal. It is popular with tourists and holidaymakers as much for its picturesque setting as its impressive natural location among the vestiges of the ancient forest that once covered inland Brittany. Once part of royal and ducal lands, the 600 hectare forest is now overseen by the French forestry commission and covers an area of over ten square kilometres. Interestingly, the legend of King Arthur began here. A number of geological and prehistoric curiosities can be found by following the trails in and around the village and forest. The tourist office, next to the little bridge that traverses the lake, is just a few minutes walk from the house and will give you all the information you need. Amongst the many fascinating sights is the Le Chaos de Rochers, the Chaos of Rocks, is a jumble of hundreds of large boulders below the dammed lake, into which the river vanishes. A 10 m descent down ladders is required to see it again, running rapidly below a dark cave called the Devil's Grotto. La Retraite has one or two of these large boulders in its garden!
Many of the walks start near to the house and along one of them you will uncover the “Miroir Aux Fées”, a quaint crêperie in the forest and tasty food.
The village offers many amenities, all within walking distance including lakeside bars and restaurants (The Hotel du Lac is excellent for families), a town square with an abundance of traditional shops, 2 supermarkets (one only five minute’s walk away), cinema, outdoor swimming pool.
