The cottage is 5 minutes walk from the marina of Carteret. 10 minutes walk from the shops, which include a renowned boulangerie, grocery, delicatessen and several chic clothes shops and galleries. The blue flag beach is 20 minutes walk or 10 minutes cycle away. The cottage has an enclosed rear courtyard, accessed at the side of the house and equipped with patio table and chairs. This is a sun trap in the mornings, ideal for leisurely lunches and a safe place for young children to play.

Changeover day
Changeover day is normally Saturday, however we can be flexible out fo high season. You will be able to access the cottage after 4pm on the arrival day and asked to vacate by 10.30am.

Bathrooms: Ground floor bathroom with bath/mixer shower over, wash basin and washing machine.
Separate WC.
Kitchen: Gas cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, double sink, electic kettle, toaster and coffee maker.
Living Rooms: The living area is open plan, on the first floor and includes a dining table with 4 chairs, 2 armchairs and a double sofa bed. There is a TV and DVD player. A highchair can be supplied and there is a stair gate fitted at the top of the stairs.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
All beds are provided with duvets and pillows but bed linen and towels are not included in the price. if necessary bed linen can be provided for an extra charge. The property is cleaned once for each occupancy.

 

Notes on accommodation
The hall on the groundfloor can accommodate a pushchair so helping to make the place suitable for young families. Out of season heating is provided by oil filled radiators.

Accessibility
Because the accommodation is over 2 floors, it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Outside
The rear courtyard is accessed from the side of the house, is fully enclosed and is supplied with a table and chairs.There is a washing line and a sink for rinsing out swimwear.

Coast/Beach
5 minutes walk from the cottage brings you to the modern marina and yacht club. This is at the head of a busy harbour used by trawlers, the Channel Islands Ferry and a sailing school. Another 15 minutes walk along the quayside brings you to the blue flag swimming beach. This is a children's paradise, with lots of sand and rock pools. During the season it is patrolled by life guards , ice-cream and snacks are available from the kiosk or the beachside restaurant, Le Potiniere.

Golf
There is a 9 hole golf course at St. Jean de la Riviere, 3 miles away

Travel
Carteret is 40 minutes drive from the ferry port of Cherbourg. It can also be reached from Caen or Le Havre. There are year round crossings from Portsmouth and Poole, by standard ferry or catamaran. Dinard airport is 2 hours drive away, with regular flights from Stansted by Ryanair.Flybe operate flights from Southhampton to Cherbourg. Use of a car is recommended.

Distances
Carteret's twin town Barneville is 5 minutes by car and another 5 minutes brings you to Barneville Plage, a popular resort with a huge beach, offering plenty of water sports and a night club. Portbail, a very old fishing village, is also a short distance away. Bayeux and the D-Day Landing beaches are about an hours drive away. The Cotentin peninsula has many interesting old towns such as Valognes and Briquebec, while Cherbourg itself is worth visiting for its shops and sea-life centre.

Further details
The local shops include a boulangerie and patisserie, a delicatessen and grocery, as well as clothes, book and marine shops. There are also interesting small galleries and a privately operated steam train which runs to Portbail on Tuesday's and Sunday's during the season.

A branch of the tourist office is open near the station, from Easter to October and is manned by very helpful staff, who usually speak some English. The main office (open all year) is in Barneville. The main bank is also in Barneville but there is a cash point in Carteret. There is a large supermarket (Champion) and Poissonerie at Barneville and a Pharmacy, doctors and dentists.

On Saturday's throughout the year there is a very popular market in Barneville but there is also a smaller market on Thursdays in Carteret and Tuesday's in Portbail. Carteret and the neighbouring villages are well supplied with places to eat, from Pizzeria and creperies to waterfront seafood restaurants which range from cheap and cheerful to the exclusive Michelin starred Marine Hotel.
