Our spacious, country kitchen

La Conciergerie was originally the gate house for the adjacent chateau in the small village of Méritein. It stands in the grounds of the chateau, but is now a separate house with a large mature garden. It has three bedrooms and can comfortably sleep six people. Meritein is in the heart of the 'Béarn', a region next to the Basque country in the West, just north of the Pyrénées. Méritein is a 15 minute walk to Navarrenx, a small fortified town on the banks of the 'Gave d'Oloron' a large river hosting the annual World Salmon Fishing Championships. In 2010 the Tour de France passes just 15 minutes away on it's way up to Bordeaux.

Guest comments
A fantastic introduction to this beautiful area. We have had a fabulous holiday staying at 'La Conciergerie'. We really enjoyed relaxing in the garden, watching the squirrels after a day's sightseeing. The road between Oloron and St Jean Pied de Port is not to be missed as the scenery is breathtakingly spectacular. We have had great food and wine and would recommend the 'Auberge Claverie' in Audaux, the 'Taverne St Jacques' in Navarrenx and the experience of visiting Bernadette at the 'Auberge du Bois' (one never forgotten!). Thank you Lindy and David for your hospitality and the home touches - all has been appreciated greatly. We certainly would recommend 'La Conciergerie' to anyone who wanted to holiday in a quality home in a beautiful, friendly area. Thank you. Karen and Terry Beaumont, September 2010
We very much enjoyed our stay. Peaceful and impeccably decorated. Beautiful big garden.Would certainly recommend it. Many Thanks. Susanna and Kaz, September 2008

Owner profile

About the owner
We both come from design backgrounds, David is a Graphic designer and illustrator and I'm a costume designer. We opened a small art gallery in Navarrenx in part of our home and both of us continue our creative careers. We also run a bicycle hire company from a 16th century gunpowder store near our house. We keep ourselves very busy!

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We moved to France in 2004 with our 9 year old daughter, to begin our new French life. We both spoke the language and fell in love with the area immediately. The people here are so warm and friendly and the proximity to the mountains and the sea makes it a perfect 'get-away ' destination. We bought 'La Conciergerie' 4 years ago with the idea to turn it into a holiday home for our parents and friends. Word abut it spread and we were soon getting enquiries from their friends too, so we decided to make it available to everyone all year round.

Unique benefits of the property
The house is just ten minutes walk from a small town with all amenities. There is a gorgeous salmon and trout fishing river where you can also swim, 5 minutes walk away.
