Maison Bernard is a traditional stone cottage with many exposed beams which has been tastefully and fully modernised throughout in the last year. 30 minutes drive from Cherbourg, it is also within very easy reach of some of France's finest beaches on the west coast. The views to the rear are of farmland and the charming, quiet, village has a church, an old mill, and an inn with a restaurant and bar. The beautiful River Douve runs through the village and the water meadows are particularly attractive. It is a perfect area for walkers, cyclists or young children. Step outside the front door and there are endless country lanes where you are unlikely to see a car and in the spring and summer the hedgerows are full of flowers. 5 minutes walk away there is a fishing lake and horse riding.

Notes on accommodation
The cottage has been renovated to a high standard by local artisans who have maintained character and charm whilst providing all the modern amenities. Unusually it has two staircases, each leading to a bedroom and bathroom. This gives the advantage of privacy, but does mean it's more suitable for two couples, maybe with a young child or baby sleeping in the same room, or a couple with older children of 7 upwards. It has excellent insulation and heating, making it ideal for a winter break as well as for summer holidays.
Accessibility
Unfortunately we do not feel this would be suitable for people with mobility problems as both the WCs are upstairs.
Outside
The cottage has a garden to the rear with a very large, sunny patio suitable for alfresco dining with uninterrupted views of fields and forests. There is a table that seats 6/8, outdoor dining chairs, two loungers, 4 deckchairs and a BBQ. A separate, large garden at the side is laid to grass and shaded by trees, including a mature fig tree and a magnolia. A full size table tennis table for use in the garden, along with other outdoor games are also provided in the barn. There are 2 adult bicycles which can be used by arrangement. The front of the house is quite a sun-trap in the afternoon and it is possible to sit outside there too.
Coast/Beach
The west coast of the peninsular has miles upon miles of beautiful unspoilt sandy beaches. Carteret is only 20 mins away with its fabulous seafood restaurants and sailing school. The beach is a body boarder's paradise and is perfect for small children with supervised swimming in the summer. There is a lovely beach restaurant and bar with showers. The more rugged east coast, famous for oysters, is about forty minutes drive away and has some pretty fishing villages and endless rock pools.
Golf
There are 3 local golf courses, a 9 hole in Brix, an 18 hole Omaha and 9 hole in St Germain. All within an half an hour drive.
Travel
L'Etang Bertrand is a half hour drive from the Cherbourg car ferry, and an hour and a half from Caen. We would say a car was essential as there is no shop in the village, although bread and croissants can usually be ordered from the local bar.
Distances
Our local town, Bricquebec, is a 5 minute drive or a peaceful half hour walk away. Market day is Monday morning and not to be missed. The larger town of Valognes where the train from Paris stops is a 20 minute drive away and has a market on Friday. The famous town of St Mere Eglise, the first town to be liberated, is only 25 minutes away, and the historic landing beaches and museums are a 40 minute drive. The tapestry in the picturesque town of Bayeaux is an hour's drive away.
Further details
Bricquebec has 4 restaurants, cafes, bars, bakeries, butchers, banks and small shops. There is a large fish market. It also has 2 large supermarkets. Other restaurants and shops can be found in Valognes or Barneville-Carteret. It is a thriving, pretty town clustered around the high walls of a medieval castle. Within the walls is a charming hotel and top-quality restaurant with an extensive wine list in the old banqueting hall.
