Notes on accommodation
The main living area is on the first floor which can be accessed either externally via steps (see photo) or internally from the 3rd bedroom also via some steps. Given the mezzanine floor and steps, the accommodation is not really baby or toddler friendly.
The captain's bed in bedroom 2 is a double mattress and will sleep 1 or 2 depending on size/age e.g. we have had 2 smaller 12 year olds or an adult and a child share, but not at the same time! If you need any advice on suitability, just ask. This is a good sized room and there is plenty of space for an additional inflatable bed on the floor if needed (can be supplied).
All the rooms are well heated with electric radiators and of course the wood burning fire in the lounge. The house is fully approved by the French tourist board and has a 3 star rating.
Bed linen, towels, electricity and wood for the fire are all included. There is a telephone for emergency use only.
Accessibility
Access to the house is via stairs, so, probably not suitable if individual mobility is restricted.
Outside
The house is set in 2 acres of garden and forest, so, there is no shortage of space if the kids (or adults) want to play football or just about any other game for that matter. There is plenty of exploring to be done, so, budding 'Famous Fivers', get going! There is a table-tennis table, large BBQ and sun loungers for the summer.
Coast/Beach
From Lus la Croix Haute you can drive to the Mediterranean coast in around 2.5 hours.
Skiing
Less than 5 mins drive from the local ski area of La Jarjatte which has 5 drag lifts and is ideal for beginners, intermediates and families. You can hire a good selection of ski equipment, toboggans etc and arrange lessons from the ESF ski instructors. There is also a new restaurant/bar for those essential refreshments. Daily ski pass prices for the 2010/11 season were €9.60 for adults and €8.00 for children high season and €8.20 & €6.50 respectively low season (children under 16). If you want a more extensive ski area, drive for 50 minutes towards Gap and head up to La Joue du Loupe which is also linked to Super Devoluy. There is an extensive network of ski runs and lifts and we were really impressed with the variety of skiing, facilities and general atmosphere. Ski passes for a full day were €26.50 for an adult and €21.20 for a child (under 12) €20.65 & €16.50 respectively for a half day pass.
Travel
If you want to fly and drive, Lyon or Grenoble airports are the nearest. We favour Lyon as there are more flights and choice of car hire companies. From Lyon (St Expury) it really is a very easy drive to Lus la Croix Haute and will take under 2 hours. The drive from Calais to Lus is also very easy with motorways all the way except for the last 40 minutes as you climb into the southern alpes. We allow 8.5 - 9.0 hours including a couple of breaks for the journey (with children..!).
Distances
The village is a 2 mins drive or 10/15 mins walk from the house. There is a general store, butcher, bakery, 2 hotels/restaurants/bars, bank (only open on certain days) post office and local produce store. Generally you can get all you need in the village. however, there are 2 good supermarkets in Veynes which is a 20 minute drive. The nearest large town is Gap which is just under an hours drive from Lus as is Grenoble and Sisteron which is also worth a visit.
Further details
The area around the house and generally is perfect for those who enjoy being outside, so, ideal for families, couples and anyone else, with some breathtaking walks, mountain biking, climbing, acro buech (climbing around on wires in the trees at La Jarjatte) canoeing, down hill biking (La Jarjatte - August only) hot air ballooning and gliding to name but a few. From the house there are literally miles of marked walking and biking trails that take you through the forest and up through the mountains. You can walk to the top of the Chamouset or to the ‘lake on top of the mountain’! From a gentle ramble to the near vertical there is something for everyone. We enjoy mountain biking along the marked forest trails, the air is clear and just so peaceful it really is fantastic. The village also has a large outdoor heated pool which is open from mid June - August the last time we were there the water was a very pleasant 26 degrees. If you drive to Serres (about 30 minutes) there is a huge reservoir which also incorporates a large swimming and sunbathing area together with pedalo/boat rental. It is a good day or half day excursion and not expensive. Even closer in Veynes (20 minutes) is a large lake, great for swimming and free. The village also has a tennis court which you can book at the local produce store...of course! In the summer, there are two markets a week in the village and if you are there at the right time, sometimes a fun fair or circus. If you don't feel like cooking or BBQing, there are two restaurants/hotels in the village. However, our favourite eatery is a 5 minute walk from the house. Les Pervenches serves fantastic homemade food with most of the ingredients grown in the garden. With the house wine at around €4.00 a bottle, the food and wine bill won't break the bank! Outdoor activities are not compulsory and chilling out with a good book in the conservatory or garden are just as effective from a therapy point of view.

“Just a short note to say that we all had a great time in your beautiful home. From start to finish, we had a relaxing and stress-free time, even with a 2yr and 3month old in tow.! The chalet is gorgeous and the village is really sweet, as are the locals. The surrounding area is great for walks & activities. Louise was really friendly & helpful as well. Loved it.”

'We had a lovely holiday and the scenery and wild flowers were just stunning, it was lovely to see the wildlife in the area, birds that we don't see here and deer, marmots and what looked like red squirrels. The house had everything that we needed and we would certainly consider a return trip' Mr and Mrs Ward-York.

About the owner
I live in the West Midlands (UK) with my wife Sarah and two teenage daughters Lucy and Emma. We both work, so that, combined with Lucy and Emma's social and sporting commitments means that life is pretty hectic and normally runs at about 100 miles per hour (like many families) It's probably why we just really love any time we can get in Lus La Croix Haute, it's peaceful, but with plenty to see and do.
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We had rented properties in France for several years starting off in Cognac and each year we moved further and further south for more reliable summer weather. When we found ourselves in a position to think about buying somewhere, I trawled the internet and just by chance came across a website which talked about the Drome/Northern Provence area (we are right on the border). We had already realised that we couldn't afford somewhere in southern provence, but prices were far more reasonable in the Drome and it seemed that not many people were aware of the area. So, usually good weather in the summer and skiing right on our doorstep in the winter seemed a "win win" solution. All I can say is that we have never regretted our decision. The area and scenery is just stunning and never dissapoints.
Unique benefits of the property
We bought Maison La Clairette because it ticked all the boxes..(apart from the cost of a complete refurbishment..!) Just over two acres of land, mostly grass but a good bit of forest as well. Walking distance to the village where you can get just about everything you need and a 5 minute walk to the nearest family run restaurant. With 4 proper seasons, we like going at any time of the year, as there is always something different to see and do. The chalet is flexible as it is not too big for 2 to share or too small for say 2 families to share (which really does make it good value) something that lots of our guests have commented on. If you have children there is plenty of space for them to play, explore or kick a ball about. For more photo's take a look at our website via the link.
