The cottage, in the centre of Pontrieux, is in Breton style and has been fully renovated with an immaculate and modern interior. Well-equipped, it has private access, with walled garden, patio and summer house for the exclusive use of guests. The cottage is within easy reach of the spectacular coast (including the Cote de Granit Rose), large sandy beaches, islands, villages, towns, harbours and castles to explore. Pontrieux is a ‘Petite Cité de Charactère’, dating from 15th century, famous for its Lavoirs or wash houses. Home to artists, Pontrieux is renowned as a 'Ville Fleurie' with four stars, and it has a weekly market. The town is at the bridging point of the River Trieux with a pretty port area where one can watch the boats, canoe or just while away some time in the bar or restaurants. Some 4 miles downstream is the Château de la Roche Jagu with extensive park and gardens and wonderful views of the river. Free events during the summer period, including Fetes des Lavoirs.

Notes on accommodation
'Ti Hanv' (the name means 'summer house' in Breton) is suitable for a couple or three people. It provides a romantic break for two with a double bed in master bedroom and an additional bedroom (with single bed), providing extra space or for a third guest. The house is almost new with a high-quality modern interior. It has electric heating throughout with thermostatic controls in each room including bath and shower room and air ventilation system. There is a wood burning stove in the lounge and a starter pack of wood/logs is supplied free. (There are extra packs of logs stored in the garden at 10 Euros per pack.) The house is not ideal for children as there are no safety features but do not hesitate to contact us if you have a baby in a cot for example or one child. Duvet and pillows, fresh mattress, pillow covers and bath mats are provided. To respect our guests the house is a no smoking area. Regrettably we cannot accommodate pets.
Accessibility
Whilst the ground floor is accessible for wheelchairs mobility within the garden and house would be very difficult and the bedrooms are on the first floor.
Outside
There is a south facing private walled garden which is well maintained, with raised rose beds, ornamental trees and fountain. The doors from the house lead on to a large patio which catches the sun most of the day. One can always find a shady area to sit. There is a large attractive summer house which has an overhead heater and lighting. This area of the garden bathes in the evening sunshine and is an ideal place to watch the sun go down with a glass of wine or a gin and tonic. Our guests often comment that the summer house has been a delightful place to sit, looking at the colourful garden, and a great place to enjoy the end of the day. Garden furniture (table and 4 chairs on patio, two sun loungers and a table and two chairs in summer house) and a barbecue are provided.
Coast/Beach
Lezardrieux, (15mins drive), where you can swim in the Trieux Estuary, has a small sandy beach. Port Blanc (20mins) with 3 separate beaches & a small quay for fishing & leisure boats. Trestel (Trevou Treguinnec) (25mins) with large stretch of sand & creperie/moulerie. Bonaparte Plage at Plouha (30mins) - large sandy beach revealed by the tide every day. St Quay Portrieux (35mins) with its port & restaurants. All have a different character but one thing in common, they are very beautiful beaches!
Golf
Golf in Brittany is ‘good value, good fun and away from it all’ according to the former sports editor of the Guardian and Observer. There are 32 courses in Brittany. The closest to the cottage are at Bégard (20 minutes) and Étables sur Mer (40 minutes) with interesting courses at St Malo-Le Tronchet, La Crinière near St Brieuc and La Freslonnière near Rennes (90 minutes).
Special interest holidays
A range of music including Breton and other folk music is played in the square and in restaurants. Cycling is popular locally and there are many excellent circular routes covering both sea and countryside. Enjoy lunch at a local village or for example Chateau de la Roche Jagu and explore the open countryside on side roads, largely free of cars. Or spend the day exploring the coastline, following the signs for the Circuit de Cote d'Or - 'gold coast'. Safe and secure garaging for bikes. Fishing is available on the river Trieux in season and sea fishing almost anywhere. There is a canoe and kayak school at the port and a windsurfing and sailing school at Port Blanc. Horse riding is available at the esteemed Equestrian Centre at Pommerit Jaudy (15 minutes).

Dinard & Brest airports are both 1¼ hours away & car hire is good value for money. The TGV train from Paris stops at Guincamp (15 minutes drive away) which is connected by local train to Pontrieux (20 minutes).

Tréguier (15 mins), also a ‘Petite Cité de Charactère’, with cathedral, shops and restaurants, has a market and free evening entertainment on Wednesdays. Further details
Pontrieux is a wonderful town, full of life and activity, which can be accessed within a few minutes from a peaceful and quiet cottage environment. The town with its four star 'ville fleurie' status has masses of flower displays. It has a market on a Monday morning with vegetable, fruit, flower, cheese, farmers, artists and clothes stalls. During the season there are many organised events: every Friday there is free entertainment in the Passerelle, in July the Pardon Notre Dame des Fontaines, the Fest Noz (Breton dancing) and a ‘live’ painting competition, in August the Marché d’Antan, Braderie/market and the Fete des Lavoirs (15 August) - with its procession of washer women, sailors and free musical entertainment including fireworks on the river. Place Le Trocquer has a pretty church and also the 16th century Tour d’Eiffel – home to the Syndicate d’Initiative with a permanent exhibition of local river birds and often an exhibition of regional artists. Place de la Liberte has the Hotel de Ville, a decor shop, creperie, wine shop, hair and beauty salons, and the Pontrev hotel. Two boulangeries, a butchers/charcuterie, 2 antique shops, a Pizzeria and French restaurant, 2 creperies, Intermarche super market, 2 pubs (one with free internet) and 3 petrol stations in the village as well as other artists workshops and a jewellery maker. You can take the train ‘Pittoresque’ down the Trieux estuary, with its magnificent views, only obtainable from the train or the river, to Paimpol – a busy port and seaside town with a market on Tuesdays. The Train a Vapeur (original steam train) also runs from Paimpol to Pontrieux daily during the summer months, stopping en route to sample crepes and view the river. From the public garden in the centre of Pontrieux, you can take a short trip on the river in small boats to see the lavoirs, both during the day and in the evening when the lavoirs are all lit. As night falls the bridges and special buildings of Pontrieux are illuminated.

Owner profile
Pontrieux fete des Lavoirs in traditional coiffe
About the owner
Our family including two children have been visiting France and Pontrieux for our holidays for a long time. Our daughter was a few months old and subsequently our son was only two weeks old on their first holidays. Our daughter was 7 and son 4 when we bought the house and we've enjoyed family holidays ever since.
My husband has been retired for some years and I still work fulltime in a marketing role for an American research company. We're very lucky in that we manage to spend most school holidays at our house.
We created the cottage for our now older children and family and friends to stay, so it has all the home comforts and luxury you would expect to have in a second home from proper heating to TV and books. Cleanliness and comfort are critical. Guide provided on what to locally.
Year purchased: 1980's
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We were on holiday in France with the family, staying in a gite nearby which was in a farmhouse, with old furniture and not as clean as we might have liked! But the region was and is lovely.
We visited Pontrieux which is a 'Petite Cite de Charactere' and a Ville Fleurie and saw a house with a sign 'A Vendre'. The owner was standing in the road, chatting to a neighbour. When we enquired about price, she asked us if we would like to see the house. That was it, we fell in love with it and went back to buy the house in the autumn. That impulse was over 23 years ago and we’ve enjoyed holidays and being part of village life there ever since. Over the years we've made many French friends. Our roots are firmly established. We've extended our house and built a completely separate cottage.
Unique benefits of the property
The cottage is next door to our house and has been created in an old granite stone building but it is new and modern on the inside. It is completely separate and set back from the main house with its own garden and entrance. The walled garden is a delight with fragrant flowers and a sunny summer house.
Most visitors tell us it is one of the best equipped and comfortable gites they have ever stayed in and very professionally run and organised.
The cottage is in the centre of the village, whilst being in an extremely quiet conservation area. You can walk to nearby restaurants and shops, including a supermarket or just stroll along the river, even do more energetic walks.
There are a range of beautiful beaches nearby, one of which we feel ranks amongst the most stunning in the world.
