Situated in beautiful countryside on the Charente-Dordogne border. Our holiday home is a 150 year old former farmhouse in a peaceful location less than a mile from the pretty Charentais village of Saint Severin, which has shops, cafés, bars and an excellent restaurant. The house, with spacious rooms, has been carefully restored to provide modern facilities (including 3 new bathrooms, and new wiring) while retaining its original character. An easy drive from Bergerac airport or Angouleme-Cognac airport (both about 50 minutes), Saint Severin is about 90 minutes from Bordeaux airport and just 45 minutes from the TGV railway station at Angouleme.

Kitchen: A traditional French country kitchen, equipped with gas stove, fridge/freezer and microwave as well as an old-fashioned buffet, table and chairs. Doors lead from the kitchen to the gardens for dining outside.
Utility Room: Washing machine, iron and ironing board, clothes horse.
Living Rooms: The living room contains a sofa and easy chairs, a sideboard, coffee table, and television with access to UK/international satellite (BBC/ITV/Sky News/CNN etc) and French terrestrial TV channels, as well as a multisystem DVD player.

Outside
The gardens, with stunning views of the village and surrounding countryside, extend nearly an acre to the back and one side of the property. They include flower beds and fruit trees (guests can help themselves to the cherries, plums, figs, apples and hazelnuts according to the season) and a large area laid to lawn. Attached to the other side of the property is a disused barn, and the only neighbours are a French family who own the barn and whose house is at the far side of the barn. Tables, chairs, parasols, deckchairs and a gas BBQ are provided for eating and lounging around outside. 2 adult bicycles and a set of boules are also available for guest use.

Coast/Beach
The river beach at Aubeterre is 10 minutes away by car and a further 10 minutes takes you to another river beach at Saint Aulaye. The swimming lake at la Jémaye in the Foret de la Double is a 20 minute drive. The beaches of the Atlantic coast are 90 minutes away.

Travel
The house is an easy 50 minutes drive from either Bergerac or Angouleme (Cognac) airports. Bordeaux airport is about 90 minutes and Limoges airport about 2 1/2 hours.

Lusignac - 5 mins - quaint bar/restaurant.
Aubeterre - 10 mins - river beach, range of restaurants.

Verteillac - 10 mins - restaurants, bars, shops.
Riberac - 15 mins - market town, canoeing, cycle hire.
Chalais - 20 mins - market town.
Angouleme - 40 mins - Charente capital.
Perigueux - 40 mins - Dordogne capital.

Further details
Dining: Excellent restaurant and cafés are within walking distance of the house in the village of Saint Séverin. Fine dining nearby at the Hostéllerie du Perigord and the Château Le Mas de Montet (both about 10 minutes drive). Other good restaurants locally at Verteillac, Aubeterre, Chalais, Ribérac and Saint Paul Lizonne.

Wine & Cognac: The bordeaux, bergerac and cognac vineyards are within a 90 minute drive of the property. Many vineyards offer tastings and the opportunity to buy first rate wines at the cellar door. In the town of Cognac, Martell, Hennessy and Remy Martin offer tours of their cellars/estates. Also well worth visiting is the hilltop town of St Emilion.

Chateaux and Churches: Numerous châteaux and Romanesque churches in the area are open for the public to visit. Particularly noteworthy are the nearby monolithic church of St Jean in Aubeterre, and further away the Château de Puyguilhem, Château de Bordeilles and Château de Hautefort.

Caves and Cliffs: Stalagmites and stalactites can be found in the Villars caves near Brantome (about 35 minutes from the house) and in the Vézère valley (about 90 minutes drive).

Shopping: Most local towns and larger villages have weekly produce markets. Saint Séverin's is in the Place de la Château on Thursdays, while Ribérac stages the area's biggest market every Friday morning. There are also Seasonal markets selling regional specialities foie gras, goose, duck, walnuts, truffles and cepes. Ribérac describes itself as the foie gras capital of the Perigord, and you can buy the delicacy direct from the producer La Bélaudie Havard at their farm in nearby Vanxains.

Horse Riding: Equestrian centres at Aubeterre, Verteillac & Bonnes.

Canoeing: Available locally on the River Dronne at Aubeterre, Riberac and Brantome, and further afield at various towns and villages along the Dordogne and Charente rivers.

Fishing: At Saint Séverin, Aubeterre, Celles, Vendoire and La Jémaye.

Booking notes
Minimum rental period is 1 week.
Rental price includes bed linen and towels.
A deposit of 40% of the total rental is required to confirm the booking, with the balance and £200 security deposit to be paid 8 weeks before the start of the rental period.
Additional charge of £65 per week for central heating in the cooler months.
