Ecluse de Treziguidy is an historic building on the River Aulne (part of the Nantes Brest canal). The nearest town is Chateaulin and Pleyben, with its famous church, is nearby. The cottage has been carefully and sympathetically renovated with tasteful decor throughout and comfortable furnishings. With the tow path directly outside there are miles of off-road walking and cycling with a large variety of birds and wildlife. Only 20 minutes drive are some of the best beaches in Brittany, the sophisticated medieval city of Quimper, picturesque villages and the lakes and hills of inland Brittany. The cottage has access to canoes, bikes and all sorts of toys for the beach and river bank. When the sun shines, it rises over the back garden and sets over the front so the conditions are perfect for spending time outside watching the kingfishers and red squirrel.

Changeover day
The changeover day is Saturday. In quiet times this can be flexible. Arrival is after 4pm and departure by 10am.
Notes on accommodation
The cottages are fully enclosed by a dwarf wall with railings so that pets and children can roam protected from the river. Both cottages have a variety of heating if needed. The large cottage has a large log burning stove and the small cottage has a wood-pellet burning stove. Both cottages have heated towel rails in the bathrooms and electric radiators in the bedrooms. In the summer, heating isn't necessary as Brittany is quite temperate. Included in the price is lots of sports equipment and toys including a 4-man Canadian canoe, inflatable canoe, bikes for adults and children, cricket and badminton sets and lots more. There is also access for the large cottage to a summer house with extra accommodation or just for drinking a glass of wine in the peace and quiet of the garden on long summer evenings.
Accessibility
Neither property has been adapted especially but both have bed settees downstairs and downstairs shower rooms. The front garden is shingle so wouldn't be easy with a wheelchair but I would arrange for ramps up the steps and boarding should anyone in a wheelchair be interested. Everything is very flat. For non-wheelchair users who find it difficult to get around, the stairs are slightly steep in both cottages which is always a feature of this style of Breton cottage.
Outside
There is a summer house that can be used as additional accommodation with the large cottage. It has a mezzanine sleeping area. Decking runs the length of the cottage to the rear leading onto a large lawn with trees and shrubs. There are BBQs with both cottages and private picnic areas with wooden seating. The front garden has stone benches and views over the river. The river is on the doorstep with fishing permits available from the local Mairie. The lock gates outside are regularly used by passing holidaymakers who rent boats upstream in Chateauneuf de Faou. Be sure to practice your pleasantries to use with passing dog-walkers on cyclists using the river tow path.
Coast/Beach
The coast is a 20 mins drive away. Pentrez is one of the nearest with its kite surfing, windsurfing, dinghy sailing and lots of other activities. Quieter beaches with few facilities but immense beauty can be found 25 mins away by car. There is equipment in both cottages for use on the beach such as kites, frisbees, cricket sets, picnic sets and rugs, boules and lots more.
Travel
The nearest airport is Brest, 25 mins drive away and with car rental facilities. Roscoff is the nearest port 30 mins drive and St.Malo is approx 2.5 hours drive. It is essential to have a car or hire-car.
Distances
Chateaulin is 3km away, Pleyben 5km. Quimper is 20 mins drive, Brest 25 mins. The highest mountain in Brittany is half an hour drive. Locronan, the famous real village used as the film set for Tess d'Urbevilles is 15 mins drive. The Crozon peninsula with its coastal towns and villages is on the doorstep, with its furthest tip about a 40 min drive. The famous Pointe du Raz with its lighthouse is 30 mins away and the fishing port and rampart town of Concarneau also 30 mins.
Further details
Port Launay is the nearest little village with a boulangerie which opens every morning except Monday and a Creperie. 15 mins by bike and 5 mins by car. Chateaulin has every facility you could need, shops, restaurants, hypermarket, banks and so on. A local taxi company is familiar with the cottages and there are details in the cottages. Pleyben is a similar distance in the opposite direction also with shops and some very good restaurants. Pleyben is very good for eating and Quimper is the nearest large town for more extensive shopping and sightseeing. Most people who visit are treated with sightings of kingfishers, coipu, red squirrel, heron, lizard, salamander, deer, buzzard and lots more. The area is well known for it's variety of birds so many people arrive with binoculars. The river provides the opportunity to canoe or kayak or swim whilst the tow path is ideal for walking and cycling. Upstream there is a very good restaurant on the river bank less than 10km bike ride. Chateaulin on the river is 14km due to the twists and turns of the river but is an easy, pretty and flat cycle ride. Several beaches on the Crozon peninsula provide opportunities for sailing, kite surfing, sand yachting and canoeing.

Owner profile
Sian and Jarvis on the beach Xmas 09, Brittany
About the owner
I live and work in Aylesbury. Jarvis the field spaniel actually owns my house and just lets me stay in it. He does the same in France when he goes too. He loves the garden and swimming in the river. Originally from Wales, having lived all over Wales and England and now waiting for my opportunity to spend half the year at Treziguidy and the other half exploring the rest of France in my motor home with my partner, David. Perhaps only a couple of years away.
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I first discovered Brittany off its magnificent coast, particularly Finistere. When I returned from sailing I vowed to explore from the land and fell in love with my little corner of Bretagne. I searched for a year before finding Treziguidy which was run down and unloved. It took me two years to renovate it and turn it into the special place it now is. The locals walk past and admire the work I have done and are glad to see the property looking so nice. The area is very diverse, there's lots to do within short distances. The hills of Brittany are near but so too are the beaches. The 'small cities of character' are all well worth visiting. Only in my third season, I have people already returning to Treziguidy as it has a special draw that is difficult to describe in words or photographs.
Unique benefits of the property
Ecluse de Treziguidy is an historic building being part of the network of lockkeepers cottages along the Nantes Brest canal. This and its access along one mile of tow path and direct frontage to the river make it fairly unique as a holiday cottage. Not totally unique as there are other lockkeepers cottages that you can rent but this is the nearest to the sea. Only 25 miles away are what are regarded as some of the best beaches in Brittany, if not in France. Treziguidy has no near neighbours and no street lighting so I always tell people to take a torch if they are arriving at night as the night sky is unbroken by ambient light. Because of its seclusion the wildlife is untroubled so you have a chance to see creatures and birds that you normally wouldn't have time to study at such length.
