Further details
Aubeterre is officially designated one of the prettiest villages in France. It offers wonderful views of the neighborouring Dordogne countryside. It has a large selection of restaurants from haute cuisine to simple creperies. The listed square is a perfect place to relax and enjoy a more leisurely way of life. The church of St. Jacques remains a marvelous example of 12th c. Romanesque architecture. There is also a Monolithic Church carved out of the rocks which is the largest subterranean Church in Europe. Aubeterre and the surrounding region has attracted many artists and crafts people over the years to set up home and share their creativity. There are many potters, painters and sculptors who exhibit and demonstrate all year round. During Ascension weekend for four days, Aubeterre turns into a 'Montmatre Hill'. If you enjoy music, at the end of July-August, there are choirs, bands, shows and concerts in the square or the Monolithic Church. In Chalais, the nearest town, during the middle of August there is International Show Jumping. The middle of September sees the famous ramparts car racing at Angoulême. The wine growing region of St. Emilion with it's ancient town and vinyards is an easy drive away as is Cognac. The street markets are one of the many delights for all visitors and locals alike. Most places hold their markets on different days; St. Aulaye is Saturday, Aubeterre Sunday, Chalais Monday and Riberac (the largest market in the Dordogne) is held on Friday.
