Originally constructed as four bergeries on the slopes leading up to the castle from the village, it has recently been converted and now provides attractive and comfortable accommodation on three levels each with its own access to patios giving magnificent views in all directions. Much of the character of the original buildings has been retained in the design of the house and the original stones and beams are visible in many rooms. The property has a 'lived in' feel as it is the family home of the owners (currently working overseas). The location combines privacy with easy access on foot to the charming traditional village of Rouffiac. The property is ideal for visitors wishing to relax or take walks in the magnificent valley dominated by the Chateau de Peyrepertuse and provides an ideal base for exploring the other historical Cathar sites in the region, the Mediterranean beaches of France and Northern Spain or Pyrennean foothills.

Notes on accommodation
Heating is by oil fired central heating system. Otherwise traditional fireplace can be used (wood is provided). There are many steps and stairs in and around the house which is built on a steep slope and has three separate levels. Therefore families with small children should take care - though the owner's children grew up in this house safely.

Accessibility
The property is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with mobility problems.
Outside
The property is above the village and surrounded by 'garrigue'. Patios are on the West (x2), North and South sides of the property accessed through the main living room, the kitchen, two of the bedrooms and the upper studio room. Two of the patios are equipped with garden furniture for sitting and for eating, one large sun umbrella and barbeque equipment.
Coast/Beach
Variety of beaches at about one hour from the house ranging from small beaches backed by steep cliffs to long wide stretches backed by sand-dunes. The rocky Cote Vermeille on the Spanish border is approximately 1 1/2 hours. Guide at the house gives many details.
Golf
Nearest golf course is on the coast at Perpignan (St Cyprien) - approximately 60 kilometers.
Travel
Perpignan (Rivesaltes) is the nearest airport (approximately 45 minutes drive), Carcasonne and Girona (Spain) airports are approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Car use is essential and can be arranged at any of these airports.
Distances
The Cathar castle of Peyrepertuse is walkable from the property in 50 minutes and other castles such as Queribus, Puilaurens and the Abbey Lagrasse and the towns of Perpignan and Narbonne are all within one hour's drive through magnificent Corbieres landscape. Further afield but practical for day trips are other historic sites such as Montsegur, Saint Martin de Canigou and the walled city of Carcassone; the art centres of Collioure, Ceret, Figueras; Andorra and Barcelona.
Further details
Small grocery shop and good quality restaurant in the village of Rouffiac. Boulangerie in nearby village of Duillac (10 minutes drive). Nearest supermarkets and banks are 30 minutes away.
Swimming in the rivers, pools and gorges in the surrounding area is a major activity. Other water based activities include rafting and canoeing in the Aude at Axat and windsurfing at Leucate.
Paragliding above the Chateau Peyrepetuse from Duillac; horse/ pony trekking can be arranged from Tuchan.
A variety of Trekking, hiking in the area including the nearby Pic de Bugarach.
