B&B, gite and house set in a small hamlet with a fishing lake and 11th century church close to the Charente Maritime border. Nearby are the ancient towns of Barbezieux and Jonzac with its renowned water park. There is ample undercover secure parking ideal for motorcycles, specialist cars and convertibles. A perfect base for a variety holiday. We are in the second sunniest region in France. The rolling countryside is surrounded by vineyards, sunflower fields and quiet roads making it ideal for cyclists, walkers and birdwatchers. The Gironde estuary and the coast are less than an hour's drive where you can take the ferry from Blaye to the Medoc and visit the beautiful wine regions including St Emilion, Cotes de Bourg and Cote de Blaye. Cognac town with its famous Cognac houses is less than 40 minutes drive where you can have a guided tour and tasting. We can organise special interest breakswhich we can tailor to suit your requirements. Massage and beauty treatments are also available.

Notes on prices
Prices are per room, per night in euros including continental breakfast. Full English breakfast supplement 7 euros. Dinner 4 courses including aperitif and wine (or beer) 25 euros per person. For stays of 5 nights or more 55 euros per night. Longer stays - by negotiation.

BED AND BREAKFAST
One ensuite double room with KIng size bed. The ensuite bathroom has a jacuzzi shower, toilet and vanity unit. An adjoining twin bedroom is available as a suite. This bedroom looks out over the barns and garden to the 11 century church.
Bedroom No 2 is available as a twin or Queen size double.
The third ensuite bedroom has a king size bed. The bathroom has a bath with overhead shower, hand basin and toilet. There is an adjoining room with a single bed.

 

Notes on accommodation
The house has full central heating. There are log fires in the dining room and sitting room. Continental breakfast is served in the large dining room. English breakfast is available for a supplement. Evening meals using local produce are available by arrangement.
The sitting room has TV, CD player. Wifi internet access with broadband and computer facilities are available for guest.

Outside
There is a large garden laid to lawn with various sitting areas and BBQ facilities.

Coast/Beach
The Gironde estuary is and coast is about 40 minutes drive. Blaye, an attractive fishing village on the estuary has a car ferry to the beautiful wine region of the Medoc, a wonderful place for wine tasting. Royan is also about 60 minutes. La Rochelle is about 1.1/2 hours drive. There is a man-made beach at Angouleme on the river Charente where you can swim along several stretches of the river.

Golf
There are three excellent golf courses in the area. Cognac Golf Club, a Championship course located on the banks of the river Charente is a gently-sloping course which meanders through woods and vineyards, is about 40 minutes drive.

Saintes Golf Club, a wooded course and includes the remains of Roman aqueduct is around 45 minutes.

Royan Golf Club, in the heart of the Foret de la Coubre, a superb course with natural dunes winds through pines along the Atlantic coast. It is less than 60 minutes drive.

Angouleme Golf Course about 40 minutes drive.


Special interest holidays
These include cookery, visits to a local Cognac distillery for Cognac and winetasting, painting with artist's tuition, courses in mosaic work. Visits to Chateaux and gardens can also be arranged. For those wishing to improve their French tuition can be provided.

Walking holidays
This is a great area for walking. We can arrange for you to follow the Frankton Trail, the escape route followed by Lt. Col. Blondie Hasler and Marine Bill Sparks, the only two Cockellshell Heroes to return from the raid on Bordeaux Harbour during World War II. They walked from Blaye on the Gironde to Ruffec in the north Charente just over 100 miles through occupied France. You can make part of the same walk, which passes about five kilometres from our village. Many other local walks are available. Full support can be provided to your next stop-over.

La Rochelle and Bergerac 90 minutes.
Poitiers 120 minutes.
Car Hire available at all airports or we can arrange to meet and collect you at the airport.
Ports:
Shortest drive is from St Malo - 5 hours. Le Havre 6 1/2 hours, Caen 6 hours, Calais 8 hours.
You can take a minicruise by Brittany Ferries to Santander in Spain which is about 6 hours away.
Eurostar/TVG to Angouleme 6 hours, collection/car hire available.

Baignes market town is 1.5km, Barbezieux 10km, Cognac(home of many big Cognac houses) 20km, Jarnac (birthplace of Francois Mitterand and Museum, also other major Cognac producers) 20km, Angouleme, historic ramparted city 40km miles, Bordeaux (home of the great Clarets) Saintes, 50km, the old Roman capital of the Charente Maritime with fine ampitheatre 40km.

Further details
Le Tatre has as fishing lake and a tennis course. A boulangerie, boucherie, pharmacie, supermarket/petrol station, post office, bank and bars, in the village of Baignes which has a weekly market in the town square. Barbezieux has shops, a number of restaurants and a weekly market.
Amongst the vineyards and sunflower fields the Charente has the longest hours of sunshinegion of France after the Cote d'Azur. The area is rich in history from pre-Roman times. At Saintes as well as a fine ampitheatre there is a Triumphal Arch as well as the many Romanesque churches and chateaux.
The historic town of Jonzac has an amazing water park - Les Antilles de Jonzac - with indoor and outdoor swimming pools with wave machines, a lagoon, beaches and tropical gardens which is open all year round. There is also an excellent gym. The complex has a Casino with an excellent restaurant and regular shows.
You can take a boat trip on the nearby Charente river or go further afield and visit the fishing ports of Port Maubert and Mortagne.
