Les Hirondelles is a traditional farmhouse of the Gironde, built from stone under a pantile roof with an adjoining barn (circa 1885). Superbly converted and furnished, with antiques, to a very high standard. It retains all original features and charm of the period. Delightfully situated in a plum orchard on a hill, the farmhouse lies off the road between Monsegur and Duras, commanding beautiful views across the valley of the Dropt and enjoys the much forgotten pleasures, which accompany this rural setting such as the cuckoo, hoopoo, butterflies and the meadow life. Whichever way you turn from the farmhouse, you will find vineyards orchards of peaches nectarines, apples, plums and pears and in the Spring an abundance of asparagus; you will feel you are every much a part of a thriving community. Both Monsegur and Duras have a wide selection of shops including good general stores, butchers, bakers, pharmacies and plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as weekly markets.

Changeover day
Changeover days are on Saturday. The property has to be vacated by 10am and arrival is from 4pm.
| Bedrooms: | Bedroom 1 double bed with en-suite bathroom. Bedroom 2 double bed with vanity unit. Bedroom 3 and 4 twin beds. |
| Bathrooms: | The main bathroom leads off the landing and is adjacent to bedrooms 2, 3 and 4. Bath/shower, WC, vanity unit/wash- hand basin, washing machine, tumble dryer. Infra red wall heater and heated rail. |
| Kitchen: | There is a well fitted open plan kitchen with double sink, gas hob, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher, magamix and fridge freezer, all set in pine units with ceramic tiled work top. The whole of the floor area is tiled with local Gironde tiles. |
| Living Rooms: | On the ground floor there is a huge living room, which is completely open plan; even on the hottest day you can escape indoors to the cool of this room. To the left, the main seating area is situated around a large open fireplace, logs are available. |
| Other: | To your right is a second seating area for playing cards, games, etc, behind which is a large dining table, capable of seating 12 people comfortably. There is also a wood-burning stove. |
| Cleaning/towels/ linen/maid service: |
Towels and linen are provided and the house is cleaned on changeover days. |
Notes on accommodation
A telephone for receiving incoming calls is available which is also set for making outgoing local calls only, so that you may seek assistance if need be or make bookings at local restaurants. Please look at our own website for more photos and information.
Outside
French windows lead onto a gravelled terrace to the side and rear of the house, with a purpose built barbecue next to a vine-covered pergola, under which there is a table and chairs for alfresco meals. On the terraces are sun loungers, drinks tables trolley and umbrella.
Four steps take you to the swimming pool level. The pool is kidney shaped eleven metres by seven with a mosaic liner and works on a salt system which makes the water very pleasant for swimming; being slightly buoyant and salty – you won’t come out of the pool with stinging red eyes! The surrounds of the pool are paved with Cahors stone and retaining stone walls give an edge to a well planted garden. Both pool and garden are regularly maintained. There is a small lawn for badminton to the rear of the property.
Coast/Beach
Arcachon beach is an hour and half drive maximum where you will see beautiful atlantic coast line and the famous sand dunes. Along with the towns attractions and endless seafood restaurants.
Golf
Ste Foye la Grande, 20 minutes away, now offers a splendid golf course with a converted chateau as a clubhouse.
Travel
Bordeaux Airpot - Merignac can be reached comfortably within the hour by auto-route. Bergerac Airpot is 45 minutes drive on local roads.
Distances
Both Monsegur and Duras are approx. 2km from the house and have a wide selection of shops including good general stores, butchers, bakers, pharmacies and plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as weekly, markets. In July, Duras celebrates it’s wine festival and Monsegur’s follows in August. Indeed all the small surrounding villages enjoy some form of celebration during the summer months.
Further details
Les Hirondelles is an ideal base from which to explore the valley of the Dordogne or to journey to the Atlantic coast, to Archachon or Biscaros with their huge sand dunes, beaches and wonderful seafood restaurants. And for those interested in viniculture, just half an hours drive will take you to St Emillion, and it’s only an hour to the Medoc or to Graves. In fact the entire area abounds in Chateaux and vineyards.
In Monsegur you can go horse riding or enjoy the open air swimming pool and nearby tennis courts. Lake St Sernin, 15 minutes drive away, offers many amenities such as sailing, wind surfing, pedalos lakeside café and for the younger children a playground area with safe, sandy beach watched over by a life guard. Ste Foye la Grande, 20 minutes away, now offers a splendid golf course with a converted chateau as a clubhouse.
