Owner profile

Our wedding day in 2006

About the owner
Prior to our move to France in 2007, my wife Carole was a manager in the NHS, based in Manchester. Now she 'manages' our 2 gites and loves the career change ! I continue to work from home as a business manager in emerging markets, travelling when required to countries as diverse as Russia, Israel, America and S. Africa. France however is very definitely our home. We have 2 daughters, from my previous marriage, who visit from the UK when they can. The rest of our family consists of a chicken (Shirley Valentine), 3 cats and 2 ducks (Greta & Garbo). Carole would like to add a donkey and a goat to the list - but I have to draw the line somewhere.

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We loved the idea of a waterside property, with lots of open space. The Moulin provides this and more. We have a huge variety of bird life from tiny wrens & blue tits to colourful kingfishers, hoopoe's and majestic herons. Sparrow hawks and kites regularly nest in the huge trees surrounding the property. The island (created by the river and divertoire) seems to have its own micro climate and, sitting by the pool with a chilled glass of local wine, its hard to believe you are only 5" from the village withs its shops, bank, restaurants and weekly market.

Unique benefits of the property
The converted barn, which now boasts 2 comfortable gites, really gives the impression of being 'away from it all'. The position of the property gives a holiday maker a plethora of choices of what to do with their day: Easy access to the coast at Arcachon (via the motorway in Marmande), wine tasting in the atmospheric town of St Emilion, canoeing on the Dropt, shopping till you 'dropt' in Bordeaux, or closer to home in picturesque Bergerac. Children are welcomed in all of the restaurants, with village street parties throughout summer aimed to entertain. If the choice proves too much, you can always sit on the patio, hide your watch and tell the time by the morning bird song and evening frogs chorus - C'est la vie!
