The Dream House is a beautifully renovated and tastefully decorated 17th century farmhouse with spacious and private grounds and a large swimming pool. It comfortably accommodates 10 people with four bedrooms (2 double and 2 twin) in the main house (3 en suite) and a spacious studio apartment by the pool (also en suite). The lay-out of the house also makes it suitable for smaller groups. The fantastic location provides something for everyone. You may decide enjoy the peace and quiet of the rural setting or to visit the local medieval towm of Sauveterre-de-Bearn or explore the historic and tourist centres of Bayonne, Biarritz St Jean de Luz tarbres Lourdes and Pau; or take advantage of the host of sporting activities within easy reach: everything from bird watching and bullfighting via bicycling, canoeing and kayaking, canyoning, fishing (the house is a field away from one of the best salmon rivers in France), golf, horse riding, rugby, surfing to walking and white water rafting.

Changeover day is usually Sunday but out of peak periods different days could be accommodated.

Notes on accommodation
There are portable air conditioning units in two of the bedrooms. Outside doors and windows have fly screens. The swimming pool is immediately beside the house and accessible through a number of doors from the main house and apartment. All visitors to the Dream House, and particularly those families with small children, are asked to ensure that they note the associated risks and consider the health and safety implications and take due care.
Outside
The house and grounds are totally enclosed and completely private. Accessed through electric security gates the house and extensive grounds provide seclusion and amenity.
The house sits in an acre of beautiful mature garden, combining terraces, lawns and flower beds, it is private and not overlooked. There is a sunny terrace in front of the house, with a shaded dining area and a large table as well as a built-in barbecue.
The large (12.5 x 6 metre) pool is is immediately beside the house with three sets of French doors opening onto it from the main house and direct access from the studio apartment through siding doors.
The pool is bordered by terraces and a large lawn dotted with ornamental trees and shrubs with plenty of space for family fun. There is a separate w.c. and shower room beside the pool.
Coast/Beach
Atlantic beaches with magnificent surfing close to Biarritz and Bayonne are within 50 minutes drive - try Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, Anglet, Hossegor or Seignosse le Penon.

Travel
The Dream House is easily accessible by air, rail, or car.
Ryanair fly from the UK to Pau and Biarritz (both 50 minutes drive, along the A63 motorway).
Bordeaux and Toulouse airports (2 hours drive) are also served by major airlines including BA and Air France.
The nearest train station is Orthez, a 20 minute drive away.
Puyoo and Dax are also close by.
TGVs run to Lourdes, Biarritz, and Tarbes which makes a Eurostar journey an attractive option.
Car hire or use of car is essential.
Distances
The Dream House itself is situated in the commune of Saint Gladie, close to the small town of Sauvéterre in the department Pyrenees-Atlantiques. There are two supermarkets in Sauvéterre (5 minutes drive away), which also has two chemists, a wonderful delicatessen, three bakeries (one is also a very good chocolatier!), a post office, bank, two newsagents, a very good garage and a weekly market. From the ramparts of the old bastide, there are spectacular views south to the majestic Pyrenees.
Further details
There is so much to see and do locally - The area is known as ‘Béarn des Gaves’ (Béarn of the Rivers) and the Dream House is just one field away from the river Saison, which forms the boundary between the Béarn and the Pays Basque, with its many picturesque villages. The Gave d’Oloron is only five minutes drive away and both rivers boast some extremely good fishing. The host of other sporting activities in the locality includes bird watching, bullfighting, cycling, canoeing and kayaking, water sports, white water rafting, karting, cannoning, caving, horse racing, trekking on foot or horseback, mountain biking, quad biking, golf, hot air ballooning, rugby, shopping. Towns within easy reach include Lourdes, Tarbes, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, Bayonne, Pau. Sauveterre is on the main pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella and the Spanish border is less than an hour away bringing Pamplona, Bilbao and other cities within reach of visitors to the Dream House.

Owner profile
About the owner
Simon and I and bought The Dream House to enjoy with our 2 children (13 and 11 when we started this adventure). We go to the house at all times of the year when work schedules and school holidays permit and love filling it with people. Christmas is a fabulous time to be out there as the skies are often blue and days still long. I have walked in a tee shirt and bare feet along Biarritz beach one day and then played in four feet of snow the next. Glorious. And Christmas lunch outside in our shirtsleeves takes some beating. Simon's 50th birthday celebrations there with 35 friends were enormous fun. This year we stayed in the house with another family for a skiing holiday. As our children get older more things appeal to them and house and area have met all demands so far.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought The Dream House so that we and the children could get to know a corner of France and its people. We explore a little more each time as well as revisiting old haunts. And the people are delightful. It is very rural and the house, garden and large pool are big enough to enjoy without going elsewhere. Yet close at hand are lovely old attractive villages and towns and anything else we could possibly want is within an hour's drive. Some days are spent luxuriating in Biarritz and St Jean de Luz and lounging on the beaches or surfing the waves; on other days we play on and in the river in splendid isolation. It is perfect cycling country - whether you enjoy as we do the more gentle roaming round the side roads or you prefer the more challenging Cols on the Tour de France route.
Unique benefits of the property
The house, the garden, the pool and the area have exceeded our hopes: it really is another home for us and is wonderfully adaptable for large numbers. We have equipped it as a home rather than as a place to stay from time to time. Every year we enjoy it more and love introducing friends to it. The apartment provides a perfect retreat for my parents when they come out with us or for Simon and me when the main house is full of teenagers. Favourite places include the river: a daily swim in the summer and 3 trips down it with Aboste last year and planning more this year; the tennis courts in Sauveterre; the beaches around Biarritz (our daughter is determined to investigate the clubs this year); walking in the Pyrenees; racing in Pau. We hope that you have as much fun here as we do.
