Come and enjoy the relaxed pace of life in this sunny corner of the Charente-Maritime. Our house is a simple, but tastefully restored 3 bedroom village house with a garden, situated in a small village close to Saintes. Our village is set in beautiful countryside amongst vineyards and sunflower fields but only 16 miles from the coast and close to historic towns. Your holiday here can be energetic if you wish or you can just switch-off and relax. The lanes around the village are almost traffic free with very few hills making them ideal for walking or cycle rides.

Daybed and double sofa-bed in second sitting room.
Bathrooms: Downstairs shower room with heated towel rail, WC, basin, shower and washing machine.
Upstairs shower room with heated towel rail, WC, basin and shower.
Kitchen: Cooker, fridge/freezer, sideboard and beautiful old wood-burning stove. There is also a large dining table plus six chairs and a high chair. This room has double doors leading to the garden.
Utility Room: Washing machine in downstairs shower room.
Living Rooms: Main sitting room is light and airy, it was recently re-decorated and a wood-burning stove installed. Door leading out to the garden. It has two comfortable sofas plus an easy chair. There is a mini Hi-fi/CD player and some books, games and a few toys.
Other: Second sitting room is a pleasant West facing room with day-bed and double sofa-bed which can provide very comfortable extra sleeping accommodation when required.

Linen is included and changed weekly. Please bring your own towels.

Notes on accommodation
This delightful house is full of charm and character, which makes it a very suitable holiday home for families or for couples. It is set in the heart of a typically French village which has a school, a mairie (town hall) and a Romanesque church just a few doors away from our house. In our garden you will find plenty of herbs such as sage, lavender, rosemary and thyme which smell wonderful and can be picked and used in your cooking.

Accessibility
This is an old property it was once several small homes for farm labourers. With rooms on different levels and many steps it is not suitable for people with mobility problems.

Outside
Enclosed garden, safe for children, with table and chairs for outside dining. Also 4 reclining chairs and 2 sunloungers. Pergola. There are 2 bicycles which guests are welcome to use. In addition we have a larger garden next to our barn. This garden is accessed via a gate in the hedge and guests are welcome to make use of it. There is ample space here for children to play and run about in.

Coast/Beach
Plage des Vergnes is just one of the very lovely beaches on the Gironde estaury where pine trees come down to a wide sandy beach. It is about 30 minutes easy drive from the house. There are other larger, sandy beaches at St Georges de Didonne and Royan and all along the Atlantic coast north of Royan.

Golf courses available at Saintes and Royan.

Travel
Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports are just over a hour away. St Malo ferry is 4.5 hours drive plus stops. Train T.G.V. to Angoulême then local train to Saintes. A car is essential. Car hire available at the airports and at Angoulême and Saintes railway stations.

Distances
Gémozac and Pons are 10 mins drive. Saintes and Cognac about 25 mins by car. La Rochelle is about an hour.

Further details
Village shop / bar in the square opposite. New playground for little children and tennis available in the village. Horse riding centre nearby. Hire of extra bicycles can be arranged. Nearest supermarket, banks, pharmacy, butcher, boulangerie and weekly market in nearby Gémozac 7kms. Public swimming pool at Gémozac is highly recommended. For serious walkers our house is not far from the St. Jacques de Compostelle route which passes the restored, ancient hospital at Pons, built for the pilgrims. The hospital is now a World Heritage site. If history is your thing you will love Pons for the Donjon tower and old streets. Saintes is known for its Roman amphitheatre, historical buildings, cathedral and churches. Music lovers can enjoy local music festivals and concerts. A wide variety of events take place in the region throughout the Summer months.

About the owner
We and our family love spending time at the house and have made some great friends in this friendly village. When we bought this house it had been empty for several years and was in need of some love and affection. Gradually over the years we have re-decorated, improved and added to it.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
The Charente-Maritime is easily accessed from the U.K. We were looking for a typically French house in a village. We also wanted a garden so that we could just step outside and enjoy the outdoor space. Within easy reach of beaches and interesting small towns this area has much to offer.

Unique benefits of the property
We like being in the centre of the village and being able to go to our village shop in the mornings to buy our bread and the local paper. The garden offers a safe place for our small grandchildren to play when they visit. It is easy to step out of the village and walk the paths through the vineyards or to take the bikes and explore the country roads. Equally we are close to some very interesting towns where we enjoy going to concerts, films and restaurants. The nearest beaches are lovely and only a short drive away. Over the years we have joined in the local fetes, where we have shared meals with our friends and enjoyed being part of village life.
