Maison du Pont is a luxury apartment, set in an original stone-built house, with a balcony overlooking the river Aude and medieval town of Limoux. From here, wander over the bridge to the square to find traditional French shops, bars and restaurants. Relax and enjoy the local food and wines, often entertained by musicians bringing together their own mix of French and Catalan cultures. Situated in the heart of the Languedoc, close to Spain and the Pyrenees, the climate is warm in summer, with crisp, cold winters, and sunshine for most of the year. There are quaint medieval villages, Cathar castles, tumbling rivers and stunning views of the mountains. Outdoor activities include hiking and cycling, as well as a well-organised range of water sports. Close to the Pyrenees, there's skiing in winter, and the opportunity to join in with the Fecos, when dancers in Pierrot costumes circle the square in a carnival unique to this lovely town.

Further details
Limoux is surrounded by interesting places to visit, including the medieval walled city of Carcassonne, Cathar castles at Montségur and Peyrepertuse, and the lovely spa towns of Rennes les Bains and Alet les Bains. Any trip out will take you through stunning countryside, with hillsides covered in vineyards that produce some of the most famous wines in the Languedoc, including Blanquette de Limoux, first discovered at the Abbaye de St Hilaire, and believed to be the oldest Brut in the world. A wine tasting tour of the region is highly recommended, as there are a great many small vineyards that will happily provide a degustation for visitors. The river Aude gives an ideal opportunity to join in with a range of water sports. Quillan is the biggest base in the area, with canoes and kayaks available for hire, and the chance to try out rafting on one of the fast flowing stretches of river. The Canal du Midi is worth a visit, with day trips leaving from Castelnaudry, where you can sit back and enjoy the scenery while passing by the historic city of Carcassonne. Please contact the owner for more information and photos on these and other activities and places to visit in the area.

8 March 2010, Christine and Steve Lee wrote: "Hi Sue,
arrived back today and just wanted to say how delighted we were by the apartment - what a lovely ambience it has, and the views from the balcony - day and night- were just a delight! We even caught some of the carnival Saturday morning. So pleased with it, normally the internet is "flattering" but in your case it was the other way round- even nicer than it appeared on the web! If the house we put an offer in doesn't go through we will certainly be back! Thank you - the children also loved it!"

Owner profile

About the owner
I live in the south of England with my husband Roger, and with both of us retired we have plenty of time for visits to Limoux. As with anyone coming to the Languedoc, there are just so many things to do and see here. We've finally organised a wine tour for ourselves and some friends to several of the 'domaines' with 'dégustation' on offer! Did you know that the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France produces more wine than the whole of Australia! We have a busy 2010 coming up, as apart from our trips to Limoux, there's an autumn holiday to New Zealand, taking advantage of a house swap from a couple who are planning a trip to Europe, with an extra special visit to Limoux!

Year purchased: 2003

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
I bought my apartment seven years ago and have been there many times, never running out of new things to see or do. The simple, natural beauty of the Languedoc never fails to fascinate me, and over the past 3 years I know my guests have felt the same, with one in particular describing it as ‘just magical’.

Unique benefits of the property
Luxurious accommodation in a wonderful location, where the whole region is steeped in history, and the countryside is covered in vineyards, fields of yellow sunflowers, roadside poppies, providing a huge choice of outdoor activities, stretching from the Pyrénees to the Mediterranean coast.
