In the region of sunflowers and vineyards, midway down the Atlantic coast, the Moulin Chaillou nestles perfectly between the historic port of La Rochelle, the scintillating city of Bordeaux, the soft sandy beaches of Royan and the rolling countryside of the Cognac vines. Set in delightfully natural surroundings, Le Moulin Chaillou offers you two quality waterside gites all with separate access in the ancient and medieval town of Pons, in the Charente Maritime region. Recently renovated to a very high standard, the two gites are attached to the 14th Century watermill and are brimming with character features such as original Charentaise stone walls and huge oak beams, pleasantly contrasting its modern facilities.

A charming self contained cottage created in what was formerly the grain store of the watermill. It retains many of the original features, such as the exposed oak beams and the Charentaise block stonework. Accessed through the en-garde of the ancient watermill, the old granary offers extremely comfortable accommodation. The lower section of the split level ground floor that follows the position of the base of the old grain silos, comprises the dining room and kitchen, containing all modern appliances such as a dishwasher, fridge freezer and hob/oven, whilst the upper level houses the lounge and beautifully decorated shower room. Via the spiral staircase, there are 2 beautifully decorated bedrooms, that continue the character feel of the building. The bedrooms overlook the river Seugne, with on one side, the watermill, and on the other the medieval dungeon of Pons. One gite contains a king size bed while the other contains 2 single beds.

Distances
We are located within the town of Pons but due its ideal location it feels as though we are in the country. The Moulin Chaillou has 4 1/2 acres of land and river frontage and it takes just 3-5 minutes to walk over the watermills islands and pretty stone bridges to find the nearest Boulangerie.

Further details
Pons itself is a pretty medieval town, complete with castle keep (the first ‘Donjon’ was raised to the ground by Richard the Lion heart in 1179). Pilgrims Hospital and the Chapel Notre-Dame Marie. At Le Moulin Chaillou you can enjoy the relaxing sounds of the river Seugne, walk around the numerous islands and explore the area. Heading inland from the Moulin Chaillou are the towns of Saintes to the north and Cognac to the east, both about 15 miles away. There are many fine sandy beaches in Royan, Meschers and Palmyer, which also hosts an outstanding zoo which is said to be the best in France. La Rochelle is a fabulous 11th century port which is now the biggest yachting centre on France’s Atlantic coast. Within a an hour's drive north are the offshore islands of Ile de Ré and Oleron, and to the south, the city of Bordeaux.
The first recorded date of our watermill was in 1340 when all the watermills of Pons were individually named. The name Chaillou is derived from an old French word meaning foundation - the rock that the watermill is actually built on. In fact the Romans brought the mechanics of the watermill to France when they first invaded and settled in the Poitou Charente, and there is some evidence to suggest that the very first watermill on site would have been Roman. The area does boast of a Gallo-Roman past and the architecture of many of the towns and villages blossom with stunning examples.
