We are located 2km outside of the market town of Aigre in the middle of the vine and sunflower growing region, close to Cognac, Angoulême and Poitiers. It is an ideal base for exploring the fantastic countryside or just relaxing by the enclosed 12m x 6m heated, saltwater swimming pool. The area is rich in tradition, architecture and a gastronomic pleasure, not to mention natural wonders. Poitou-Charentes counts among its treasures Roman ruins, long sandy beaches less than a hour’s drive from us, beautiful green rivers and waterways of the Mararis Poitevin and of course the very picturesque town of Cognac.

Notes on accommodation
All gites have heating so are available all year round and the whole area is suitable for children.
Outside
The pool at La Maison Bleu is a 12m x 6m saltwater pool; it has a shallow end of 1m and a deep end of 1.6m. A constant temperature of 27 degrees celsius is maintained in the pool, so the water temperature is comfortable from May until mid October each year. The whole pool is recalculated and filtered every two and a half hours to ensure that the water is not only lovely and warm, but also crystal clear for your enjoyment.
The area around the pool is fully enclosed with high walls to ensure not only your privacy but your safety at all times. Only the clients of La Maison Bleu Gîtes can use the pool; entry to the pool area is gained via a security-coded door lock that guests will be issued with on arrival.
A hot shower has been provided for you, and as you can see from the pictures, so has a large patio area for relaxation. There are several comfortable sun beds with cushions available for lounging by the pool. The pergola provides plenty of shade.

1 hour's drive from the fantastic beaches at La Rochelle.
Golf
Our area is extremely fortunate to have a selection of good courses to choose from. Required skill levels vary from course to course, so that there should be a course nearby to suit everyone:
Angoulême - Golf de l'Hirondelle
[18 holes, 5 365 m, Par 70, slope 139]
It is built on a spur of limestone rock opposite the town. There are fine views of the cathedral and the pink tiled roofs. The 18 holes cover about 34 hectares in the St. Martin woods. The fairways call for good physical condition and a high degree of skill notably because they are very narrow.
Ecuras - Golf international de la Prèze
[18 holes, 3 164 m, Par 36, slope 140]
The courses are set in 65 hectares of wooded valleys. The ornamental lakes, slopes and undergrowth provide a range of natural difficulties. The fine fairways and fast greens make it a challenging international course.
St. Brice - Golf du Cognac
[18 holes, 6 142 m, Par 72, slope 135]
Set on the banks of the Charente at Cognac.
Special interest holidays
The local area around La Maison Bleu has a variety of activities to suit all people and all age ranges. Other than the more sedate activities such as sightseeing, sunbathing and relaxing, many sports are on offer too.
There is freshwater bathing offered in the flowing waters of the Charente. In the heart of the Charente Limousine are 2 neighbouring lakes covering some 350 hectares at Lavaud and Mas Chaban. Here you will find rowing, canoeing, windsurfing, bathing and fishing on the menu.
Near Angoulême, the vast man-made lake at St. Yrieix is ideal for watersports (sailing, windsurfing, canoeing). The lake at Brossac, set in the countryside, offers a completely different place for bathing which is particularly suitable for very young children.
Travel
You will find getting to us quite a simple procedure. You will need to find Aigre on the map, which is north of Cognac, south-east of Poitiers and east of La Rochelle.
There are 3 airports which serve our area with a fourth, just half an hour away at Angoulême due to open in spring 2007. Approximate drive times from the airports to La Maison Bleu are given below.
La Rochelle airport - 1 hour 5 minutes.
Poitiers airport - 50 minutes.
Limoges airport - 1 hour 15 minutes.
Further details
Cognac is a great place to spend a day learning about the region's famous spirit, lots of boat trips on the river are available and distillery visits with plenty of free samples are a must! Perhaps you might like to just wander around the old town or sit in the square watching the world go by.
The lovely small towns tell a story of Poitou-Charentes. Angoulême, about half an hour's drive from us has Roman remains, La Rochelle (one hours drive) with its medieval houses and 18th century homes built for ship owners and traders is we think a fantastic place to spend a day walking around and having a long lunch on the quayside watching the boats come and go.
The region has 450km of coastline to explore and the sea plays an important role in the history and culture of the region. Fresh oysters, mussels and fish can be found at every local market; they sell everything from chickens to tractors!
The markets become very addictive and are a great way to spend a morning before it becomes too hot and you will want to return to La Maison Bleu and take advantage of our large, heated pool and soak up some of the hot sun that comes with being in the Charente micro-climate.
There are many inland lakes nearby to visit that are suitable for swimming or fishing, or just take a picnic for the day. The lakes have life-guards on duty and play areas for the children. These can be busy at weekends and on Wednesdays as the majority of French schools are not open.
