Traditional stone house in a small hamlet in beautiful rolling countryside amidst vineyards of the Gaillac wine-growing region. The nearest winegrower is a short walk along the lane. Le Caminal’s terraced south-facing garden has uninterrupted views across the sweeping vineyards to the unspoilt hill village of Campagnac. Nearby is the Gresigne Forest (one of Europe’s largest and oldest oak forests) with walking trails and picnic areas and a wonderful variety of wildlife and birds, the whole area is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The region offers many sporting activities, village markets and fetes, music festivals, beautiful medieval villages and other historic sites, and simply peaceful and endearing countryside. The nearest towns for shops and markets, restaurants and cafes are less than 10 minutes away. The house has been recently refurbished by local artisans, and as far as possible traditional features have been retained.

Outside
Le Caminal is accessed through its impressive stone gateway with large antique iron gates. Inside the gates is a short drive with parking off to the side. The garden around the house is on two levels and is enclosed by the entry gates, the ancient stone wall of the neighbouring building and a small fence/hedge. On the upper level, immediately outside the house is a large stone paved terrace shaded by a large oak tree, with a stone table and seating for dining or having a drink, and with stunning views over the vineyards to Campagnac. There is also a BBQ and comfortable lounge chairs. Stone steps lead down from the terrace through the stone wall to the lower level of the garden, a larger grassy lawn with shade trees and the same stunning views. Through a gate in the fence on the edge of this garden, across the small lane of the hamlet, is a sloping field which also belongs to the property.

Golf
There are a number of local golf courses, including at Albi and Florentin (about 1/2 hour away) with reasonable prices.

Travel
The nearest airports are Toulouse (1 hr), Rodez and Carcasonne (about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs). From the channel ports, about 10 hours. The TGV from Paris also goes to Toulouse. Gaillac station is 15 minutes away.

Distances
The nearest villages with shops, restaurants and cafes are about 10 minutes away (Cordes, Cahuzac, Castelnau de Montmiral). Vaour and St. Beauzile (5/10 mins) have the nearest bakers. Gaillac (full service market town) is 15 minutes away and Albi (county town) is 1/2 hour away.

Further details
The many activities are available in the area, most within ½ hour or less of Le Caminal, include: sporting activities such as kayaking/canoeing at St Antonin, golf, riding (stables in the two nearest villages), rambling, cycling (bikes can be hired locally). There is a local lake complex for swimming, pedalo etc, 15 minutes away and an indoor pool complex with slides at Albi.
Sightseeing and cultural - the area is well-known for its 'bastides' or fortified medieval villages and towns (spend a day on the 'circuit des bastides'). Albi has a beautiful restored centre with impressive cathedral, Toulouse Lautrec museum and medieval streets, good shopping and restaurants. The impressive new bridge at Millau makes a good day trip, taking in the caves of Roquefort en route.
Markets, fêtes, food, wine - there are markets almost every day of the week in a local town or village and throughout the summer the region abounds in local fêtes and festivals, 'marchés de nuit' (night markets, with stalls selling local products, food and wine), music festivals, and other local activities and shows. Wine-tasting is available in most of the local vineyards. Restaurants range from the local artisanal auberges with 11 euro menus (3 or 4 courses, sometimes with wine included) to regional restaurants and some very smart restaurants.
Nature - The area is particularly fine for bird-watching and one may see hoopoes, redstarts, hawks and even a blue roller. Owls can be heard at night. There is also a rich population of butterflies and wild flowers such as wild orchids. The Gresigne Forest (5 minutes away) has splendid walking trails and wonderful wildlife.
Toulouse is an hour away by car or by train from Gaillac – France’s third largest city, it has all the shopping, museums and amenities one would expect, including an opera house with full seasons of opera and concerts (early booking is advised).
