Outside
Les Grands Coudrais is set in over 3 acres of beautiful open countryside and is situated within a small hamlet next door to the resident farmer. Each cottage has its own private garden and shares the 10 x 5m enclosed swimming pool. Sun loungers, chairs and tables are provided by the pool as well as pool games and toys. Table tennis, badminton, boules and a children's play area (swings and sandpit) are all available within the grounds. Our large field on the edge of the property is perfect for games of French cricket, learning to cycle or for little ones to simply run around and let off steam! We live in the main farmhouse on the property and are always on hand to offer help and assistance. Our 10 year old daughter Amélie and our very gentle golden retriever Sophie also like to greet our guests!
Coast/Beach
There are several water leisure parks with lake swimming in the surrounding area. The drive to the famous coastal city of La Rochelle takes less than 2 hours and is well worth it. The city has beautifully maintained its past architecture, making it one of the most picturesque and historically rich cities on the Atlantic coast. Don't miss the wonderful aquarium or the lovely Vieux Port (Old Harbour) in the heart of the city, lined with restaurants serving every kind of seafood.
Golf
La Manoir de Beauvoir course is just outside Poitiers and attracts golfers from all over France and Europe. The course is 6,635 yards long with fairly severely undulating greens at times and there are some treacherous water hazards. The Golf de l'Hirondelle course in Angoulême is an undulating parkland course and one of the oldest golf courses in France. The Domaine des Forges gold course at Les Forges is described as both challenging and relaxing. The 27 hole golf course has slopes, ponds, bunkers and unpredictable greens but also offers peace and quiet and open spaces.
Travel
Driving from St Malo/Le Havre/Caen ferry ports takes approximately 4 - 5 hours, with Calais about 6 to 7 hours. 45 minutes from Poitiers airport (Ryanair from Stanstead and Edinburgh) and 1 hour 15 mins from Limoges airport (Ryanair from Stanstead, Bristol, East Midlands,Leeds Bradford and Liverpool). Car hire is available at both airports and is recommended. The TGV, the French high-speed train stops at Ruffec, just 15 minutes away and the journey time from Paris is about 2 hours 15 minutes.

We are situated in a very quiet hamlet off the D1 between Civray and Ruffec. Civray is our nearest small market town and is just 3 kms away. Angouleme to the south is just 40 minutes away, and Limoges is a drive of 1 hour 30 minutes. Poitiers and Futuroscope is just 45 minutes away and the Valley of the Monkeys is a only short drive. Confolens is 40 minutes away and this beautiful town is famous for the annual folk festival "Danses et Musiques du Monde" held every August.
Further details
The Vienne is a beautiful sunflower region, offering plenty of local markets throughout the week. There is a large supermarket and pharmacy at the top of the main road. Civray offers riverside walks along the Charente, delicious patisseries and the smell of freshly baked baguettes from the shops situated around the small square dominated by the magnificent 12th century church of St Nicholas. Civray has banks, a post office, restaurants and small shops and a lively market on Tuesdays. Details of many other great restaurants in the area can be found in your cottage and we will happily make any reservations for you.
