About the owner
We spent our holidays, exploring France, for 12 years, until we fell in love with La Rose des Vents on a rainy day in October. It ticked all the boxes - we saw that, here, we could offer the type of holiday accommodation, we would like to stay in! So we took the plunge, gave up our busy careers in the UK (I worked in the NHS and Graham was an engineer with National Grid) and moved with our cat, Mischa, to this beautiful region. Since then we have lavished care and attention renovating the properties to ensure our guests have a great holiday and along the way learned to speak French, made lots of friends, sampled numerous restaurants, were adopted by 3 kittens - Honey, Lucy and Rosie, joined a couple of classic car clubs and explored the area in our Morgan sports cars -our other great love.
Year purchased: 2004
Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
We had visited this Region before, and loved everything about it - the climate, relaxing lifestyle and people. We live in a small hamlet - there is no traffic noise, just birdsong & the occasional tractor. No light pollution - the stars at night are incredible (last summer our guests enjoyed a midnight swim whilst watching the meteorite showers!) but we are not isolated. We are ideally located. Cognac is just 15 mins drive away and Saintes & St Jean d'Angely close by. In 45 mins we can be sitting on the beach, or for a fix of city life, be in Bordeaux within an hour and a half. It is beautiful driving country on near deserted roads, through rolling vineyards and there is always something going on - street theatre, music festivals, firework displays, artisan markets and fetes.
Unique benefits of the property
Our home is over 200 years old. In addition to the main house, the separate stables and an estate managers house, are set within 2.5 acres of beautiful gated grounds with views over the vineyard, once owned by the former owner. Although we named them, Rose and Manor cottage, the renovated properties are now spacious houses with private gardens and courtyards offering complete privacy and the cottages are only one of three properties in this area (Val de Saintonge) to be awarded 4 stars by the French Tourist Office for their comfort, style and facilities. Come and relax by the pool or explore this beautiful region - any queries, just ring the bell by our kitchen door, we are here to help and if you are interested, enjoy a complimentary ride through the vineyards in our 4 seater Morgans.
