La Cigogne is a restored charentais farmhouse, built around a small central courtyard. The house is at the centre, the 'chais' to the left has been converted into a summer room. The built-in barbeque is adjacent to the chais. The barn to the right is used as a store and not open to visitors. The private pool is on the other side of the 'chais'. Behind the house is a lawn and hedge.
Our neighbours are mainly working farmers.
There are nearby ports on the Gironde Estuary, as well as several eleventh and twelfth century churches. Within easy reach are the towns of Blaye, Royan, and Rochefort. Also easily accessible are the towns of Cognac, La Rochelle and Bordeaux, as well as the areas of the Bordeaux vineyards to the south and west. Atlantic beaches, such as Lacanau, are about an hour away.

Notes on accommodation
The telephone is for incoming calls only. Mobile reception is available and there is Wireless Internet now available in the summer room. Fully enclosed pool area.
The house does not have good wheelchair access.
Outside
Private swimming pool with patio, a walled front courtyard with built-in barbecue, and back garden area with terrace.
Coast/Beach
Meschers: 25 minutes away has a nice beach that is relatively quiet. St Georges: A bit further away, with bigger beaches, lots of sand and young people and plenty of things to do. Royan: A crowded resort that boasts a zoo and a yachting centre. Lots to do if you are <22 years old. Plenty of cheap eating places and a very good indoor/outdoor daily market. There is a ferry from Royan across the Gironde Estuary to Atlantic surfing beaches, such as Lacanau, about an hour away.
Golf
18 hole golf courses are at Cognac, Royan and Saintes; and a number in northern Bordeaux. There is a 9 hole course at Monguyon.
Special interest holidays
A sailing school has opened up at Port Maubert, 15 minutes from La Cigogne by car. Here there is the option for novices, including children, to learn to sail and there is also the facility for day-sailing into the estuary.
Travel
By air to Bordeaux, La Rochelle or Bergerac.
By TGV to Angouleme, with a bus connection to Jonzac.
Roughly seven hours driving from nearest channel ports.

Further details
St. Dizant is the nearest village where you can find a very good general shop that runs the post office and a little restaurant at weekends. It also has a bar, a small Chateau and a garage. More stores and bakeries are at nearby St Fort, St Ciers and St Thomas. Mirambeau, 14 kilometers away, has an excellent supermarket as well as a selection of shops and restaurants. Throughout the surrounding area there are regular markets and regional produce outlets offering wine, cognac, pineau (a local aperitif),oysters and fresh farm produce. Blaye, Royan, and Rochefort, offer excellent markets and good restaurants.

Refunds are possible if cancellation is no later than 10 days after booking.
The balance is due no later than 1 month before rental date.

16/7/10 Mark from Belgium: This is the place. Unfortunately not ours but still, once you get there you will feel at home, as if in your home. Every possible thing imaginable is there: so it is not merely a holiday home, it is a home where you could live 365 days every year. Well situated for calm or active holidays and within easy reach of a motorway exit. We have been to several holiday homes over the past few years but this really blew it, we are looooonging to go back. And if ever we are lucky enough to retire, it will be somewhere in the neighbourhood, where we will try to recreate the cosy atmosphere of La Cigogne. You can bet on that!

About the owner
Although we are British, our family has always lived and worked overseas, however we wanted a base in Europe in order to keep links with our family and friends in Great Britain. This was particularly important when our children were at school there, and they and their friends helped tremendously when we restored La Cigogne from a very basic farmhouse to the comfortable and roomy home that it is today.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Since we all speak French, France seemed the obvious choice, and the Charente Maritime fitted perfectly with its easy access to Britain by road, rail and air. Its spaciousness, proximity to water, varied countryside and reputation for lots of sunshine. What we love about La Cigogne is the peace and the beauty of the surrounding area. We enjoy walking from the house and also being able to go out to a meal at a variety of small restaurants nearby. We can chose between local markets or a good well stocked supermarket, and we have easy access to vineyards or wildfowl areas and many other things as well, should we wish to make an excursion.
Unique benefits of the property
Twice a year we ourselves spend time at La Cigogne to relax and appreciate it, at the same time we enjoy preparing the garden for the summer, and make sure everything is in working order. We are still improving things little by little. We encourage friends and family to join us when we are there, they can come and go doing whatever takes their fancy.
